About David

B.Eng in Comp Systems (Warwick Uni) then 16 years of professional experience. I’ve seen and written a lot of software as a professional developer (Panasonic, Nokia, McLaren etc). My last 10+ years have been managing and mentoring software developers at all levels, but I still love to code as a hobby.
I enjoy working on code and seeing it come to life. I’m very familiar with all the fun of coding, and also with the frustrations… But every piece of software is either great fun or it's great experience, and usually both. :-)
I’ve worked and studied all over the world so I’m happy working across time-zones, and if English isn't your first language then that's no problem at all. I’m a huge supporter of D&I, in work and in my family and social context, so I enjoy working with… well, everyone. :-)

About the lesson

Hi!
For 10 years I ran the Mentoring scheme in the Engineering division of a very large Defence company. Mentoring has to be adapted to the mentee, of course, and tailored so it works well for you. We have to put aside enough time for it, establish goals etc, and I’m always keen to see students enjoying what they’re doing so as their coding skills increase, I give them puzzles and challenges to solve through programming.
I also enjoy improving my mentoring/tutoring abilities and it’s great when students give me feedback on what works for them, what doesn’t etc.
Some specific areas where I can help are:
• Design, coding, syntax, data structures, algorithms - complete basics up to advanced techniques.
• How to design code to avoid typical bugs, and to make your code easier to debug later. How to use debugging tools.
• How to optimise your code for whatever is most useful to you or your customers, e.g. increasing speed, minimising memory usage.
• The difference between writing code at school/college and in industry. This is very difficult to teach in an academic setting and many developers learn it the hard way when they start their careers, but it CAN be taught and it might influence your career decisions as well as your coding style.
• Interview coaching and mock interviews, if you’re looking ahead to using your software skills professionally. (I have been interviewing from apprentices and grads up to industry experts for 12 years.)
