About Camilla
I’m a highly experienced full-time tutor with excellent references, a wealth of experience, and a long-running very successful track record. I mainly work through word-of-mouth recommendation but I have also garnered some reviews on this site. I am lucky enough to be able to tutor full-time due to continual high demand. What marks me apart from other tutors is, I have found, my retention level: students who began with me for 7+ support will return for 11+ and then GCSE assistance. I am usually asked to tutor all of their younger siblings. So I find that I often work for families for many years, teaching all their children in turn (or sometimes simultaneously!).
I have personal experience of the tutoring and 11+ process myself, having gained a full academic scholarship, aged 10, to City of London School for Girls. Here I obtained grades putting me among the top 10 highest-scoring candidates in the country in English, maths, psychology and RS at both GCSE- and A-level. I went on to study English Literature at the University of Warwick, where I achieved the highest 1st class BA Hons degree in my graduating year. I then worked as a corporate Learning Designer (writing and designing online training courses for clients) for a number of firms, such as Accenture and KPMG, for over 18 years whilst tutoring in my spare time and at weekends. A few years ago, and after having two girls of my own, I decided to tutor full time - which I am lucky enough to be able to do from our lovely house in Walthamstow, right next to Lloyd park.
I currently have 12 students (3 GCSE, 9 primary level/ 11+) and capacity for one or two more. Parents can rest assured that I do not need to fit lessons in around any other work and that all of my students have my full attention.
Tutoring full-time allows me to focus solely on my lesson planning and resource-gathering. It also affords me greater flexibility when it comes to rearranging lessons when needed. Please note that I do not offer group sessions as, although this can be a more lucrative teaching approach, I personally do not believe it is anywhere near as effective as one-on-one tutoring. Every child learns differently, has different skill sets to build upon and therefore benefits more from individual focus.
I have over 18 years tutoring experience specialising in 11+ and GCSE-level English literature, English language and maths. Two of my 11+ students recently gained full academic scholarships to their desired selective schools and one of my students gained early 10+ entry to City of London School for Boys - meaning I lost him a year earlier than planned, but I'm very pleased he's done so well!
I'm a supportive, interactive tutor who aims to inspire all my students to achieve their full academic potential in an increasingly competitive sector. Working towards exams should not be a slog or something to dread; done in the right way, it can be a very rewarding and rich experience which can set students up for life with a new/renewed appreciation for academia as well as their own creativity, skills and resilience.
I specialise in gaining entry at these specific London secondary schools: Alleyn’s, Bancrofts, Brentwood, Channing, Chelmsford, Chigwell, City of London School for Boys, City of London School for Girls, Dame Alice Owen, Forest, Francis Holland, Godolphin and Latymer, Haberdashers, Henrietta Barnett, Highgate, Ilford County, JAGs, King Edwards, Queenswood, Latymer, North Bridge House, North London Collegiate, South Hampstead, St Paul's School, Westcliffe, Westminster, Woodford County, QE Boys.
My strengths as a tutor lie in my long experience of teaching, as well as my own academic and communication skills. I have a large number of resources (academic books, secondary sources such as JStor, past papers etc) to use with students. I make lessons fun, engaging, interactive and tailored towards every single student I take on. Passing exams is a stepping stone to more experiences and more choice. I want all my students to be in the best possible position where they can make informed choices over where they want to go and who they want to be.

I am a very friendly, creative, engaging, organised and supportive tutor. I make lessons fun and interactive, using visual aids, creative tools, and helping to build upon and structure students' ideas. All children have a creative spark within them and fundamentally enjoy learning new things. It's my job as a tutor to harness this spark and this enjoyment - and to make sure that it's properly channelled and utilised.
I am particularly adept at quickly identifying a student's strengths and weaknesses (without labelling them as such) and adjusting my approach accordingly. Strengths should be praised and built upon. Weaknesses need to be noted and returned to, to iron out any difficulties or unhelpful methods which may have been picked up. The educational process should be enjoyable and fulfilling, bolstering a child's confidence, while pushing them to realise their full academic potential.
I do believe in researching thoroughly what has been tested before as the best indicator of what is to come in the forthcoming exam. For this reason, I conduct up-to-date research on specific schools including regularly speaking to them about any adjustments made that year in their exams - it's amazing how often this happens.
I would like to think that all my students enjoy my lessons; my retention and demand level would suggest I am doing something right.
I have over 18 years of tutoring experience, and have taught a large number of students, from primary to GCSE and A-level as well as adult learners. I specialise in examination preparation, particularly towards the 11+ and GCSE-examinations. I am currently teaching 12 students aged between 8 and 21. A few of my students are neurodivergent; I have considerable experience teaching children with autism and/or ADHD - neither is a hindrance to learning and these have, in fact, been some of my most creative students who have excelled in the one-on-one set up.
Re 11+, I teach comprehension and language analysis foundational skills as well as verbal reasoning. I work with students to develop their creative writing, introducing relevant resources to help build upon preferred themes and ultimately create a 'bank' of preferred essays (the best kind of exam prep!). I also teach the fundamentals for both essay structuring and persuasive writing.
I teach the full maths curriculum, including concepts beyond primary level (because, in all honesty, this is an 11+ requirement). I also teach skills for cognitive ability testing and non-verbal reasoning.
Re GCSE, I am particularly familiar with the AQA exam board syllabus. I teach English literature, being highly familiar with the GCSE texts and poetry anthologies routinely used. I also teach English language (my personal favourite): language analysis techniques and passage comparison skills. Finally, I teach GCSE maths, helping break down and explain tricky concepts using diagrams, real-world examples and linked concepts - all of which really helps with both engagement and retainment.
Last year, I taught eight students towards the 11+ examination, two towards the 7+ exam, and three towards GCSE. All my students achieved excellent results with the majority getting into every single school they applied to and all students gaining entry to at least one preferred school. All my GCSE students achieved 8's and 9's; a vast improvement on where they started.
A significant number of my 11+ students have received full academic scholarships to top North London private schools, which is incredibly rewarding. A few years ago, I helped a university student achieve a 1st Class Honours degree in English literature from Bristol University, and countless other students expand their knowledge base, grow confident in their writing and mathematical skills, and reap the rewards of academic success.
I work systematically with students to help strengthen their skills and cover any gaps in their knowledge. I have access to a large number of academic resources - including an active subscription with JStor - in order to help with revision, coursework and exam preparation. I help build up the confidence as well as knowledge of my students to put them in the strongest position for passing exams and gaining the best possible marks. Many students struggle with unhelpful learning strategies for years; I have tried and tested methods for success.
