About Benjamin George

I earned my BA in English at Cambridge University in 2013. My first experience of teaching came in 2015, when I was doing my masters in Philosophy at University College London; I volunteered as a ‘learning companion’ for an A-level Philosophy class at the associated UCL Academy. Since then, and particularly since 2019, I have worked as a freelance teacher in Bangladesh, Luxembourg and the UK, as well as remotely. I've also, since October 2021, worked with A&J Education. Most of my students have been learning English as a second language, but some have been native speakers. Most of my students have been adults, but some have been at secondary school, a few even at primary school. Personally, I feel I have most to offer to advanced learners of the language, and to those who want to improve their writing, or who are interested in studying literature, philosophy or politics. I am flexible though!

Aside from my teaching, I have worked as an in-house proofreader at the European Court of Justice, and volunteered extensively – including with Friendship, a large development NGO in Bangladesh, and the Agape Project, a discussion and non-formal learning centre in Italy. I have also published a few short stories and articles, and am currently working on a short film that goes into production this summer.

I have taught students of diverse ages and levels, and with diverse learning objectives and learning styles. My lessons thus look very different depending on who I'm teaching. One thing all my lessons have in common is that I harness the students' own passions to help them learn. In other words, in my classes, we talk a lot about the things the students are interested in, whatever those things might be - I find that, this way, students enjoy the lessons more and are more engaged and remember the contents of the lessons better. (Also, very often, I get to learn something too!)

Sometimes my lessons are straight conversations on topics chosen by the students, during which we note down any words, turns of phrase or concepts that are new for them. Sometimes my lessons involve exercises, or even games, to help the students memorise new vocabulary. Sometimes students send me things they’ve written before classes, and, in the classes, we go through them together, discussing them and trying to improve them. Sometimes my students and I work together on homework they have or on their CV and cover letter or even on messages they want to post on social media. Often I recommend films, series, short stories, lectures, comedy sketches, poems, songs, articles (and so on) to my students, based on their interests or learning objectives – and then we discuss them in the classes. Often the recommendations come from the students too.

Basically, I have a love of language, and the craft of writing. I also enjoy getting to know people, and discussing life in all its weirdness and wonderfulness. Through my teaching I can engage all of these interests, and be of use to others too!
