About Lyman
Hello, I'm Lyman! I'm based in the UK, but I spent three years living and studying in the beautiful city of Kyoto. I hold an MA and a PhD in Social Anthropology with a regional specialisation in Japanese Studies. I believe that good all-round knowledge of Japanese history, society, and culture enriches each student's language journey: I love working with each individual student to unlock their unique interests in Japan and Japanese. My own personal favourite elements of Japanese culture include Noh theatre, detective novels (like 'Inspector Imanishi Investigates'), and traditional shamisen music.

I received my PhD in Social Anthropology with a specialism in Japanese Studies in 2022 and I've been tutoring online since! I offer hour-long classes on Japanese language, culture, and history. I teach from absolute beginner level through to intermediate. I can prepare students to sit up to Level N4 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) and am equally happy to teach Japanese for travel, pleasure, or research purposes. My methodology focuses on demystifying the Japanese writing and grammatical systems from our first class. I introduce basic kanji alongside the phonetic writing system, with an emphasis on using kana instead of transliteration, and offer specific training and feedback on Japanese pronunciation. I welcome all students from 16 years and up! My specialist teaching interest is in neurodiverse and disabled students; LGBTQ+ students; and adult education, particularly retirees. I am passionate about making Japanese study a joy and a pleasure and will work closely with you to ensure our lessons are tailored just to fit your needs.
