About Jacob

I am currently a mechanical engineering student, and I studied Spanish throughout middle school and high school. I served a mission in Japan for a year and a half and worked very hard to understand the language and culture and learn how to communicate naturally with natives. Throughout high school I taught piano and swim to children, which helped me understand how different students learn and how I can effectively support them and help them improve. I also taught English and some Japanese while in Japan, so I gained some experience with how people acquire language.
I'm dedicated to being a reliable tutor by being prepared for sessions, staying organized, and having consistent communication so we're both on the same page. I enjoy teaching and am committed to creating a non-judgmental, encouraging environment where students can find confidence and success, both in and beyond the classroom.

About the lesson

My approach to teaching Japanese is based on the natural Japanese that I experienced while living in Japan for 1.5 years. Since Japanese can be quite difficult to learn as an English speaker, I work to build confidence in students by giving them conversation, grammar, and vocabulary practice and supporting them with easy-to-understand explanations and relevant examples. I believe in the importance of using language to communicate ideas and learn about new cultures, and my aim is to help students increase their ability to express themselves in a foreign language.

During lessons we'll review previous concepts, go over new material, and practice what we're learning. I teach everything from basic kana, pronunciation rules, and grammar structure to intermediate grammar patterns and natural speaking/listening. I'm a firm believer in trial and error in language learning, so I create an environment where students can practice and make mistakes free of judgment.

As a basic grammar resource, I use A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar (日本語基本文法辞典) and BunPro. If the student is currently in classes, we'll base lessons on class materials and topics currently being covered.
