About Matthew
Getting started with jazz and improvisation can be a scary and mysterious thing at first. Listening to jazz can leave us wondering what exactly are they playing, and how can they come up with such intricate solos? If you find yourself asking those questions, or just want to get better in your jazz band at school, I can be a great resource for you.
I am originally from Buffalo, NY, where I was privately trained in jazz performance and theory by an amazing player and teacher, Dave Schiavone. It is through this that I have developed an accessible way to pass on information about jazz improvisation.
I have also played in collegiate ensembles at the University of Rochester, where I was also able to join studio recordings with the Joey Stempien Big Band (on Spotify). I understand what it takes to get up on stage in front of big crowds and figure out how to deliver my message as a jazz musician.
One of the things I love most about jazz is it becomes an amazing way to express yourself in music. Having the freedom to improvise is unique and special, and learning tools from jazz theory can allow a person to better deliver their message as a musician. I often like to think of myself as a painter, using different brushes and colors to paint a picture of myself in my playing. Learning jazz theory and improvisation gives me those colors and brushes to use as I play.

I have a huge passion for jazz saxophone and I have been privately trained as well as played in many collegiate ensembles.
Jazz improvisation can be mysterious to those students trying to get started. Through my studies I have learned interesting and accessible ways to introduce and teach jazz saxophone to all ages, including those starting out and those with some experience already.
I first take the time to see where the student is currently, musically, theoretically, and in playing ability. Then the real work starts. I want to first impart strong knowledge about scales, chords, and the frameworks most musicians use to go about reading jazz music. Then I go through different modalities that can be used to play jazz improvisation. This includes different scale exercises, chord based exercises, and classic and modern licks that can be played right away in the song.
Listening is also incredibly important in jazz. Passing on the notes is not enough on its own. That is why another focus to lessons is listening and learning standard tunes in the jazz world where concepts are fully applied and the feel of jazz can begin to be understood.
I love working with students to improve their musicianship and develop a passion for jazz music, and I find that the focus brought to jazz and practice can be applied to a wide range of other life areas.
