About Mandie

I am an experienced Solicitor. I have worked in the field of immigration, nationality, asylum and human rights law for 15 years. I was recently recognised as a leading Lawyer in the field of Immigration law in the Legal 500:

“[the department] acts for SMEs on Tier 1 entrepreneur applications and employer responsibilities, as well as individuals [and] making asylum claims. Mandie Sewa is head of department.”

I am familiar with working with a wide range of individuals whose first language is not English. I am an advocate of the Plain English Campaign and have attended several in-house training courses on this subject. The use of Plain English is a communication style that I often use when working with my students, trainees and clients. I have provided training courses for a number of large organisations such as the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC), Immigration Law Practitioners’ Association (ILPA), Higher Education colleges, Universities, and in-house courses for accountancy, law and engineering firms.

Some of the sessions that I deliver are bespoke courses to suit the needs of the user such as training educational establishments about the changes in the Immigration Rules for Students (Tier 4). These types of courses involve determining specific training needs, clarifying the goals of the course, developing the training outline and assimilating this this in a way that can be utilised effectively by all course participants. Other courses such as OISC courses follow a more detailed syllabus. The more structured courses require a need to have an awareness of the core topics of the A-level law syllabus such as sources of law; machinery of justice; and legal personnel.

So that I can teach effectively I use a range of different teaching styles that offer all students a variety of options in which they utilise the learning environment including visual (such as using PowerPoint and Infographics); auditory (such as role play); kinaesthetic (such as mind maps and checklists); and tactile (such as debates and moots). My experience has taught me that by incorporating the above teaching styles the delivery of the courses I teach appeals equally to innovative, common sense analytic and dynamic learners.

I deliver a variety of different 1-2-1 sessions, seminars, workshops and courses, to groups with various levels of ability and understanding of English language means I often use the processes of self-evaluation and self-observation to improve the way that I teach the courses. I ask my students to provide me with both formal and informal, direct and anonymous feedback I have found that this approach has meant that I am able to be flexible to meet the needs of the students and adapt my teaching style where this is needed.
