About Maazi Chris

Do you want to learn Igbo but don't know where to start? Do you understand some Igbo but struggle to speak it confidently? Or are you looking to improve your conversational Igbo, pronunciation, reading, writing, and overall fluency?

I can help.

My name is Chukwu Christian Onyemaechi (Maazi Chris) and over the years, I have built a solid portfolio in Igbo language education, developing published textbooks, online courses, practice tests, and structured learning resources for learners at different levels. I am the author of the Bịa Mụta Igbo comprehensive Igbo language textbook series, which takes learners progressively from foundational knowledge through intermediate, advanced, and mastery-level Igbo. I have also developed the Ọjụgọ series of printed Igbo practice and assessment books, designed to help learners reinforce what they have learned, practise independently, and assess their progress.

My work also extends beyond printed books. I have developed online Igbo language courses and practice tests that allow learners to study, revise, and test their knowledge at their own pace, alongside personalised online lessons for learners who want direct guidance and interaction with an experienced teacher. This combination of teaching, publishing, course development, and assessment has given me extensive experience in helping learners approach Igbo in a structured and practical way.

My teaching philosophy is simple: learning Igbo should ultimately enable you to use Igbo. I don't want you to spend months memorising vocabulary without being able to hold a conversation. I want to help you understand how the language works, develop your vocabulary, improve your pronunciation and tone, construct correct sentences, understand what others are saying, and gradually become confident expressing yourself in Igbo.

Our lessons can therefore include conversational Igbo, everyday expressions, vocabulary development, pronunciation and tone marks, grammar, sentence construction, reading, writing, listening and comprehension, role-play, idioms, proverbs, and aspects of Igbo culture. I adapt the lessons to your current level, learning pace, interests, and specific objectives rather than forcing every learner through exactly the same programme.

I teach children, teenagers, and adults, including complete beginners, heritage learners who grew up hearing Igbo but never became confident speakers, members of the Igbo diaspora reconnecting with their language and culture, intermediate learners seeking better conversational ability, and advanced learners who want to refine their speaking, comprehension, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary.

If you are starting from zero, I can guide you through the foundations. If you understand Igbo but struggle to speak it, I can help you bridge that gap through structured conversation and practical exercises. If you already speak some Igbo, I can help you improve your accuracy, vocabulary, fluency, and understanding.

What sets my approach apart is that I don't see tutoring as simply spending one hour together and moving on. I have spent years building an ecosystem of Igbo learning resources—including the Bịa Mụta Igbo textbook series, Ọjụgọ printed practice and assessment books, online Igbo courses, online practice tests, and personalised lessons—because I believe learners progress best when teaching, practice, and assessment work together.

My goal is to take you on a clear learning journey: from not knowing Igbo, to understanding it, forming sentences, participating in conversations, and eventually communicating with confidence and greater proficiency. Whether your motivation is family, heritage, culture, travel, relationships, academic interest, professional reasons, or simply a genuine desire to learn the language, I will work with you to make your learning experience practical, structured, engaging, and purposeful.

If you are serious about learning Igbo and want to work with an experienced educator who has a substantial portfolio of published books, online courses, assessment materials, and teaching experience, I would be delighted to help you begin or continue your Igbo learning journey.

My lessons are designed to help you do more than simply study Igbo; they are designed to help you understand and use the language confidently in real-life situations. Whether you are a complete beginner, an intermediate learner, or already have some knowledge of Igbo and want to become more proficient, I structure each lesson around your current ability, goals, interests, and learning pace.

At the beginning, I take time to understand your reason for learning Igbo and assess your current level. This helps me determine where to start and what areas deserve the most attention. A learner who knows nothing about Igbo will receive a different learning pathway from someone who understands Igbo but struggles to speak, while an advanced learner may need more challenging conversations, grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, and comprehension activities.

My lessons combine structured teaching with plenty of practical language use. We work on pronunciation, Igbo alphabet and tone marks, vocabulary, grammar, sentence construction, listening and comprehension, reading, writing, and especially conversational Igbo. Rather than learning isolated words without context, you will learn how to combine words and expressions to communicate naturally and appropriately.

Conversation is an important part of my teaching approach. As your level develops, you will have opportunities to practise introducing yourself, asking and answering questions, describing people and situations, expressing your needs and opinions, talking about everyday activities, and participating in realistic conversations. I will correct your mistakes, explain why they are mistakes, and show you better ways to express yourself so that your accuracy and confidence improve together.

For learners interested in Igbo culture, our lessons can also include greetings and etiquette, idioms, proverbs, traditional expressions, stories, and cultural contexts behind certain words and expressions. This helps you understand not only what to say, but also when, why, and how to say it appropriately.

I use a variety of learning resources to support the lessons, including materials from my Bịa Mụta Igbo textbook series, Ọjụgọ practice and assessment books, online Igbo courses, practice tests, customised exercises, and other carefully selected learning materials. These resources give you opportunities to review what we cover during lessons and continue practising between sessions.

I also believe that learners need regular opportunities to measure their progress. Depending on your level and goals, I may use exercises, conversations, reading activities, quizzes, practice tests, and other assessments to identify areas where you are improving and areas that require more attention. This allows us to continually adjust your learning pathway rather than simply moving through lessons without knowing whether you are progressing.

For children and teenagers, I make lessons age-appropriate, interactive, and engaging, using activities, stories, repetition, questions, games, and practical communication exercises where appropriate. For adults and heritage learners, I can place greater emphasis on conversation, family communication, pronunciation, cultural understanding, grammar, reading, writing, or any other area that is important to you.

Most importantly, I want every lesson to move you closer to being able to actually use Igbo. My aim is not simply for you to complete lessons or memorise vocabulary, but to help you progress from learning individual words and expressions to understanding sentences, constructing your own sentences, participating in conversations, understanding spoken Igbo, and communicating with increasing confidence and proficiency.

Details

My lessons are designed as a complete learning experience rather than simply a one-hour tutoring session. The rate reflects the personalised instruction, structured curriculum, learning resources, practice opportunities, and ongoing support that I provide to help learners make genuine progress in speaking and understanding Igbo.

Please note that the ₦5,000 maximum rate currently allowed/displayed by Superprof is below my standard tutoring rate and does not fully reflect the scope of my offering. My standard rate for learners in Nigeria is ₦8,000 per hour, while my rate for international learners is $13 per hour. I understand that this is higher than the maximum rate shown by Superprof, so I want to be completely transparent about what is included in my actual offering.

When you learn with me, your payment covers much more than the live lesson itself. You receive personalised online Igbo instruction tailored to your level and objectives, a structured learning curriculum to guide your progress, and access to learning materials that support what we cover during our sessions.

I also provide my learners with free access to my online Igbo practice tests, beginning with Step 1 and progressing through Step 4. These assessments allow you to practise what you have learned, test your understanding, identify areas where you need improvement, and track your development as you progress through the language.

You also receive WhatsApp support for speaking and pronunciation practice, giving you an opportunity to ask questions, practise selected expressions, clarify pronunciation, and receive guidance between lessons. This is particularly valuable because language proficiency develops through regular practice, not only during the hour spent in a live lesson.

Where appropriate, I also use resources from my published Bịa Mụta Igbo textbook series, my Ọjụgọ printed Igbo practice and assessment books, online Igbo courses, practice tests, customised exercises, and other learning materials to create a more complete learning pathway for you.

The value of the lesson therefore goes beyond the time we spend together on a video call. You are getting access to an experienced Igbo educator, a structured curriculum, published learning resources, assessment tools, personalised instruction, and ongoing practice support designed to help you progress towards real conversational ability and greater proficiency.

If your primary goal is conversational Igbo, we can focus heavily on speaking and listening. If you want to improve pronunciation, tone marks, grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, comprehension, or cultural understanding, I can adapt the lessons accordingly. If you already understand Igbo but struggle to speak it, I can specifically work with you to bridge that gap.

I also understand that learners have different budgets and learning needs. If you are unsure whether my lessons are the right fit for you, please feel free to contact me before booking. Tell me about your current level, what you want to achieve, and what you hope to get from the lessons, and I will be happy to discuss the best approach with you.

My objective is not to sell you as many lessons as possible. It is to help you make measurable progress towards understanding and speaking Igbo confidently. If you are looking for a comprehensive, personalised Igbo learning experience rather than a basic tutoring session, the additional value included in my rate is designed precisely for that purpose.
