About Phillip

Phillip has a BA in Biblical Languages, and a MA in Bible and ANE studies. Phillip studied textual criticism and advanced Hebrew at seminary and is a prospective student for research and studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Phillip has 9 years of teaching experience.

About the lesson

I'm offering private lessons (like online college lessons but one-to-one, and more catered to your own pace) in Biblical and Biblical-related languages, as well as manuscript studies. Please see below for all the subjects I offer: Hebrew - the following courses will serve the purpose of the student to gain competency in reading, writing, and speaking all kinds of Hebrew, from ancient to modern. Including competency in studying and comparing Biblical Hebrew manuscripts, reading rabbinical literature, as well as utilization of the masoretic masorahs, and conversation in modern Hebrew language. The student shall also have a well-established understanding of the language’s development, and the influence of Aramaic on it and its study. Biblical Hebrew Grammar Biblical Hebrew Reading Advanced Hebrew Grammar Historical Hebrew Grammar (+ DSS) Old Testament Textual Criticism Biblical Hebrew (Conversational) Mishnaic Hebrew (for Mishnah, Talmud, Toseftah, Halakic literature, Siddur) Modern Hebrew (Conversational) Greek - the following courses will serve the purpose of the student to gain competency in reading ancient Greek for the NT, Septuagint, and Church Fathers, comparing variant readings in the manuscript tradition, as well as conversing in the Biblical Koine Greek dialect. The student will also gain proficiency in understanding the place and importance of ancient Greek for the study of the Bible. Attic Greek (optional, for late classical writers, NT background) Biblical Greek Grammar (LXX, NT, Church Fthrs up to AD 600) Biblical Greek Reading Advanced Greek Grammar New Testament Textual Criticism Biblical Greek (Conversational) The Septuagint Theology - The following optional courses will serve to ground the student to the alternative perspectives between ancient (near-)eastern concept and culture and modern western culture for a better understanding of the underlying theological system in the Scriptures and down into the early Church period. Ancient Near-Eastern Background of the OT (from Akkadian literature) Church Fathers, Theology, and Cultural Studies Aramaic - The following courses will serve for giving the student competency in reading and understanding the parts of the Hebrew Bible that are in Aramaic (e.g. portions of Daniel and Ezra), and how Aramaic has had a great influence upon the OT as a whole. Additionally, the Syriac language and Targums represent ancient translations of the Bible which are helpful for comparative studies. Biblical Aramaic Grammar Biblical Aramaic & Targum Reading Classical Syriac Specialized Studies - The student may choose one or more of the following to learn how to read the ancient handwriting and a particular manuscript in the ancient language of a select book(s) of Scripture. Greek Paleography & Manuscripts Hebrew Paleography & Manuscripts Aramaic/Syriac Paleography & Manuscripts Other Courses Akkadian (co-taught) Ugaritic (co-taught) Ecclesiastical Latin Ge’ez (Classical Ethiopic)
