Find your basketball trainer in Mont-Royal

The fundamentals of basketball come down to seven essential skills.

• Ball handling: keeping control of the ball at different speeds and directions.
• Passing and catching: delivering the ball accurately to a teammate in the right spot.
• Shooting and layups: using proper form, follow-through and footwork to score.
• Pivoting: turning safely on one foot to protect the ball or find an open teammate.

With guided practice, these seven skills quickly become second nature.

Rule 1 comes from the very first basketball rulebook, written in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith.

• The first rule allowed players to throw the ball in any direction, with one or both hands.
• At the time, dribbling did not exist yet, so passing was the only way to move the ball.
• This rule kept the game fast and team-focused, since no one could run with the ball.
• This simple rule became the foundation for how the modern game controls ball movement.

Learning the "why" behind the rules builds a deeper understanding of basketball strategy.
