Insider tips to improve your drawing skills in Kelowna

How can I learn to draw professionally?

Are you someone who loves to doodle on napkins in a restaurant? Maybe you’ve always had a natural knack for creating straight lines and circles? Perhaps drawing is a hobby of yours but you feel ready to take it a step further and turn it into a career…the question is, how can I learn to draw professionally? Of course, one method of becoming an artist - focusing specifically on drawing in Kelowna, is to go to art school. This method requires years of dedication, money, and hard work. Like many careers, this is a route many choose to take when wanting to hone their craft. However, it is not the only way to become the next Degas or Delacroix.

Like all forms of the arts, becoming a professional in one of these fields, like drawing, requires grit, dedication, and most importantly, practice. I think we all are aware that Michelangelo didn’t paint the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel in a day.  Drawing professionally takes time, practice, patience, and passion. Sure, art classes definitely will help you achieve your professional goals. However, it is the intention and understanding that practice and passion is what makes an artist succeed professionally - that is the starting point.

Now, if you know all of this and are ready to learn how to draw professionally, we at Superprof can help you find which path is best for you in Kelowna. With many of our local Kelowna drawing tutors offering the first session free, you have the opportunity to discuss and plan your drawing journey. Need help finding an art program? Your personal online or in person tutor can help with that! Already in art school and could use an outside critique on your work? Your Superprof drawing tutor can be your guide, critic, and confident on your professional drawing journey. They are there to help you succeed and achieve your goals. Even better, it’s as simple as a few clicks on our website.

How much do drawing classes cost?

An investment in your future as a professional drawing artist is priceless, but we still must ask these questions. If you plan on enrolling in a fine arts degree, that depends on which university or art school you choose. Art classes and camps can start at $160 and up at various local art galleries.

Looking at diplomas at the associates level? The price tag is going to range from $3,000 - $5,000 at the associates level - before factoring student aid.

One hour with a Kelowna drawing professional and enthusiast from Superprof?

That averages about $23 an hour depending on which tutor you find best suits your needs.

What are the 5 basic skills of drawing?

Every drawing artist, no matter where your skill level is at, should be well-versed in the basics of drawing. By refining your drawing skills and deepening your understanding of the art - form you will have the ability to create new and exciting pieces while being able to explore other mediums if you so wish.

How does one do that, you may ask? Here are 5 basic skills that you should know when learning how to draw:

Recognize and understand edges - definable forms are simply a set of borders or sides. From simple line drawings to an intricate still life, or a flowing landscape - all require an understanding of how edges behave to show you what is going on and the forms meant to be portrayed.

Space - This is the areas in which your object occupies and the areas in which your object does not occupy. All forms necessitate the use of space.

Shadows and Light - The perception of values (lightness or darkness of colors) could be one of the most essential skills of drawing an artist must understand. It’s all about balance and building.

Relationships - like in interpersonal relationships, at least two people must interact and collaborate cohesively to form a connection. Drawing is similar. Object lines must work together and interact in a way that makes sense and is relative to the other lines on the paper. Any single thing you draw on paper is related to something else on that same sheet of paper. You, the drawing artist, must ensure that all partnerships make sense in order for the final work of art to make sense.

Cohesiveness - this means, bringing all of the previous skills together to make sense. Bringing the aforementioned skills together in order to produce a drawing takes time and practice. Sure, it seems almost second nature, but like putting together a good cake, drawing a piece of art must include all ingredients in the right proportions and at the right time.
