If there’s one thing about photography, it’s that it’s one of the best visual ways to preserve memories. Pictures are things that you can easily look at and be reminded of the history behind the photo.
Going back, photography has been around since the 5th century BCE. However, it was only in the 11th century that the camera obscura - or pinhole image - was first invented by an Iraqi scientist.
However, the camera obscura still wasn’t able to record the images being captured, it only went as far as projecting them on another surface. Moreover, the pictures could only be used to trace drawings that were close to real life. This is because the pictures were upside down.
Another thing about the camera obscura was that it wasn’t portable until the 17th century. Around this time, basic lenses were introduced to focus the light being used.
In 1830s, Joseph Nicephore Niepce was able to use a portable camera obscura to create a picture that didn’t fade quickly. The camera was used to expose a bitumen-coated pewter plate to light.
This was the start of several successful experiments with photography. Since then, daguerreotypes, emulsion plates, and wet plates were eventually developed.
But since the process was quite expensive, only the rich and the professionals could afford it. That’s why George Eastman created the company Kodak to make the camera accessible to everyone.
The company was put up in the 1880s and created a flexible film roll that didn’t require a lot of materials like solid plates. From here on, the self-contained box camera was developed and this camera could hold up to 100 film exposures at a time.
This product was already accessible to the average-earning consumer. In the 1940s, most consumers could already afford cameras and films.
Today, anybody can easily take pictures for as long as they have smartphones. These smartphones have built-in cameras that allow you to take pictures anytime, anywhere, for as long as it's with you.
What’s even more fascinating is that people can take pictures with them everywhere and don’t need to worry about bringing a physical copy. It’s automatically saved in the smartphone, which makes it even more convenient.
With this kind of convenience, it’s easy for people to take photography for granted. It’s believed that it’s something that almost anybody can do.
One of the reasons why photography is important is because it allows people to see various parts of the world without the need to travel. Although it’s not the same as seeing it in real life, it makes every part of the world accessible to anybody.
Another reason why it’s important is because it’s a crucial way to save memories. Since pictures are still images, you get to capture the exact emotions and faces of a specific time. You can also look back at the photos and reminisce.
Pictures are also evidence that are hard to manipulate. Since hard copies of photos are hard to tamper with, it’s most likely used in solving crimes and studying history.
While it’s something that any person with a smartphone or camera can do, not everybody can be an expert on it. Photography is also a form of art that needs to be studied and mastered. It has its own sets of techniques and lessons that not everyone can perfect.
Behind every good photo is a great photographer. This photographer might be gifted with the talent or might have studied and practiced photography for a long time.
There are several challenges in photography that most enthusiasts and professionals face. It’s not an easy art to master, nor does everything cooperate with you all the time.
Here are some of them:
Photography is as complicated as painting. You need to conceptualise what you want the final picture to look like. This means that if you’re dealing with a model, you need to direct what he or she needs to do.
For landscape photographers, this means taking into account the time you’re going to take pictures and the area where you’re going to take the picture. You’re not always going to get it right the first time, but taking a few more shots and reassessing every now and then definitely helps.
Let’s face it, this is one of the most expensive professions and hobbies out there. Cameras cost a lot of money, and if you want to improve the quality of photos, you need to invest in the best equipment.
This means that you’re going to spend a lot over the years, buying lens, investing in great cameras, and many more. It’s not going to be cheap, but the return on investment is surely a great thing to keep in mind.
Trends in Photography
Whether it’s the type of camera to be used or the editing style, photography also works in trends. If you’re doing this as a hobby, you can’t feel much pressure. But if you’re going to pursue this as a career or a job, you definitely need to keep up with the times.
It’s just like how professionals need to constantly educate themselves whenever new things in the market or industry arise. This is essential because it’s one way to stay afloat in the industry.
There are a lot of schools that offer photography lessons in Canada but it’s surely not everybody’s cup of tea. A lot of people opt to be mentored by a professional or be educated by a private photography tutor.
In Canada, there are tons of professionals who are willing to teach you everything you need to know about photography.
