History of Photography

Camera Obscura

Going back, photography has been around since the 5th century BCE. However, it was only in the 11th century that the camera obscura - or pinhole image - was first invented by an Iraqi scientist. 

However, the camera obscura still wasn’t able to record the images being captured, it only went as far as projecting them on another surface. Moreover, the pictures could only be used to trace drawings that were close to real life. This is because the pictures were upside down. 

Another thing about the camera obscura was that it wasn’t portable until the 17th century. Around this time, basic lenses were introduced to focus the light being used. 

Permanent Images

In 1830s, Joseph Nicephore Niepce was able to use a portable camera obscura to create a picture that didn’t fade quickly. The camera was used to expose a bitumen-coated pewter plate to light. 

This was the start of several successful experiments with photography. Since then, daguerreotypes, emulsion plates, and wet plates were eventually developed. 

Kodak

But since the process was quite expensive, only the rich and the professionals could afford it. That’s why George Eastman created the company Kodak to make the camera accessible to everyone. 

The company was put up in the 1880s and created a flexible film roll that didn’t require a lot of materials like solid plates. From here on, the self-contained box camera was developed and this camera could hold up to 100 film exposures at a time. 

This product was already accessible to the average-earning consumer. In the 1940s, most consumers could already afford cameras and films. 

Importance of Photography

Today, anybody can easily take pictures for as long as they have smartphones. These smartphones have built-in cameras that allow you to take pictures anytime, anywhere, for as long as it's with you. 

What’s even more fascinating is that people can take pictures with them everywhere and don’t need to worry about bringing a physical copy. It’s automatically saved in the smartphone, which makes it even more convenient.
