I was born in CA, quickly moved to Washington State, and then at the age of 12 moved to Zambia, Africa. My senior year of high school was spent at a boarding school in Nairobi, Kenya, where I took a class in black and white photography.
I immediately fell in love with the entire process and from then on always carried a camera with me.
After graduating high school, I moved to California to attend a university where I majored in Biology.
I had many jobs, and most of them were based around photography. For my birthday, using the money I made using school cameras, I bought myself a Nikon d80. I graduated college with a degree in graphic design and digital media because I realized my passion was in the arts and not the Krebs cycle.
I used photography to pay my rent as I moved around from Riverside, Catalina Island, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, and Costa Mesa. I got a real job as a junior designer at a creative agency in Laguna where I learned many skills and programs, but ultimately decided that I was a photographer and not a graphic designer.
I sold all my belongings, and booked a one-way ticket to Australia. I brought a single backpack with about 4 days' worth of clothes, my laptop, a phone that I didn’t have the right SIM for, and my recently purchased Canon 5dmk2.
I traveled for 6 months through every state of Australia, spent a month in New Zealand, and ten glorious days in Indonesia. I originally planned to travel for a year, but Australia was insanely expensive to the point I had to get jobs working in kitchens out there. I honestly didn’t know if I was going to be able to come home, but miraculously I was able to book a wedding (my main source of income after college) and booked a flight home.
The entire time I was in Australia, I played around with the video feature on my camera and decided to put it together as a video. I had over six months' worth of video clips. Editing that video took me over a month to finish because I had no idea what I was doing, but I got it done, and it got a lot of attention.
That video propelled me into the world of filmmaking where I lived with a bunch of artists in a crazy house where we were all learning and shooting and teaching each other new things that we figured out. At first, we didn’t get paid much, but we made adjustment after adjustment, and eventually became in such a demand that we decided to start a company specializing in independent contract commercial videos.
That was over ten years ago.
During that time, any little trick that made my editing better was added to my process. I learned through trial and error, YouTube, and asked professionals for tips and over ten years later now have the confidence to tell my clients that I can shoot and have an edit ready within 24-48 hours (if needed).
Being in the industry, I realized that by learning efficient workflows and techniques can make editing a truly creative, and enjoyable process. I have learned how to optimize my layouts so that I don’t have to dig through the program to get what I need. I have figured out a keyboard shortcut system that allows me to move my hands less, click less, and waste the least amount of energy and time possible. I have learned selection techniques that world-class documentary editors use, and have learned how to utilize all the above-mentioned skills to make my edits dynamic while being in a state of flow.
