I have been Makiko's Japanese student for four years. She is an amazing teacher, and our Japanese lesson is one of the best parts of my week. I began learning Japanese with the goal to be an exchange student in Japan, and she helped me to achieve my goal. During my exchange I was able to communicate easily, and people in my host community were surprised by my Japanese abilities. Makiko taught me vocabulary, grammar, and kanji following the Genki textbook method. She explains grammar points well, and shares helpful tidbits and strategies not written in the textbook. She is also a great conversation partner, and she has helped me with everything from practicing self-introductions to practicing daily conversations about a wide range of topics. No matter your level of proficiency, Makiko will help you improve your skills in all areas of Japanese. She is also kind and incredibly fun to talk to. Right before I began my exchange program, she gave me insights and encouragement, and now that the program is over I meet with her every week to maintain my Japanese conversational abilities and continue to progress in the language. Makiko-sensei is very warm, down-to-earth, humorous, and very flexible, readily adapting to the student's needs while making sure you have a great time :) She gently corrects when needed and has great language insight from her schooling in Australia.
