About Asia
I am a “broad spectrum” biologist and a neuroscientist, interested in the mechanisms of memory, learning, motor learning, spatial cognition, perception, the relationship between motor and non-motor functions, language, the biological foundations of syntax, and brain health in general.
Apart from English, I am fluent in Japanese at an academic level (able to read historical novels and teaching philosophy and science in Japanese).
I am familiar with a bunch of other languages (the stronger ones being Spanish and Mandarin), but according to my own definition, I do not consider myself fluent in a language until I can comfortably read classical literature and teach science.
I see language and physical movement as sharing common computational infrastructure, and therefore I derive a lot of inspiration in teaching language from teaching movement, and vice versa.
I am really very passionate about syntax. I am also very sensitive to natural spoken speech, and the ways in which people express their ideas in short open-ended fragments. These fragments reveal a lot about the speaker’s sequence processing limitations and the strategies they use in sentence construction.

When language is used simply for communication, it’s totally okay to make mistakes.
However, if your goal is full proficiency, and your native language is very different syntactically from your target language, at some point you may find that you can understand others and be perfectly understood, but you still don’t quite reach the level of a native speaker.
If you want to really understand the deep structure of the Russian language, be able to think in Russian, and, as we say in Russian, свободно владеть языком (literally “to freely own the language”), I can help identify the problems in your sentence construction habits stemming from your native language, identify your weak points and help create a study plan that leads to full proficiency.
I am a biologist and neuroscientist, and I am very keen on the theory of language capability having evolved from motor control of reaching/grasping and action sequence planning.
While it’s common in linguistics to draw syntactic trees to analyze sentence structure, my area of research and expertise is related to what these trees are at a neurobiological level, how they get constructed, and how they can be modified.
My lessons / consultations are for people at intermediate to advanced levels of proficiency.
During the first session:
- We will discuss your own perception of what’s limiting you at your current level
- Which channels you are currently using to study Russian
- Have a conversation in Russian
- I will identify your systematic mistakes and weak points
- We may do some morphological and/or syntactic analysis of your speech
- I will give you advice on how to best structure your learning to address your current needs
If I feel that at your current level you will benefit more from simply more exposure or drills/structured learning, I will recommend not to study with me.
If I believe that I can help you, for future sessions:
- I will be giving you home tasks, largely consisting of two types of sentence writing: (1) writing the first thing that comes to mind without any editing; (2) translating/answering questions and editing the sentence until you are satisfied with the result.
- I will analyze your home task and the face-to-face time will be dedicated to addressing your agrammatical habits.
- If you are interested in accent reduction, we can also dedicate part of the time to that.
I am definitely not a good fit for you if:
- You do not consider full proficiency as your goal in studying Russian language
- If you are at a beginner/low intermediate level
- If you are not able to allocate time for additional home work and review
