About Marya

I have an LLB Honours in Law and International Relations and an MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice which I obtained from the University of Edinburgh. I am not finishing up my PhD in Criminology, also at the University of Edinburgh!
I have always loved teaching and began teaching in high school, where I taught Model United Nations and tutored children from low income families at the NASMA Learning and Resource Centre. I was also an English teacher at the Migrant Community Centre in Beirut, where I trained teachers on lesson plans, oversaw meeting the syllabus requirements and ensured that creative ways of learning were in place, including debates and competitions.
I have tutored four courses at the University of Edinburgh, both in the law school and sociology department: Introduction to Criminology (2022), Introduction to Global Crime and Justice (2022-2023 & 2023-2024), Sociology of Illicit Markets and Criminal Organisations (2024) and Understanding Race and Colonialism (2025). I have a large range of teaching experience from a variety of backgrounds but what my students can always expect of me is that their specific needs will be addressed through a range of different learning formats!

About the lesson

I am passionate about criminology, sociology and the law and express this in my sessions - I believe it is important to discuss contemporary issues in my classrooms and love exploring theoretical concepts with my students and connecting them to real-world issues. I believe teaching is a team effort and I always ask my students what they are comfortable with, how they like to learn and what kind of activities have been most helpful to them in the past. Most of my sessions will include a range of interactive discussions, case-studies and concept mapping so that students can become more comfortable with complex theoretical concepts. I also often incorporate planning sessions and feedback hours which are incredibly important for assignments and managing course loads. I create tailored checklists for my students which can help make revision and exam periods less daunting and help us both learn how to proceed with learning. I often employ multi-media formats like short videos/images/audio clips as well as presentations and online software to make the classroom accessible for everyone. My lessons are geared towards students who would prefer an individual-based, less rigidly-structured class. My approach to teaching is to start with larger, more abstract themes before narrowing down to particular topics. My priority is communication and I structure my lessons based on the persons needs!
