About James
I come from Belgium where I completed my IB diploma with a final mark of 43/45 including a 7/7 in mathematics HL, physics HL and chemistry SL, and an A on my mathematics Extended Essay. During my last two years at school, I tutored mathematics and sciences to 8th-10th grade students.
I then moved to London and read a bachelor's degree in mathematics at UCL and graduated with a first-class degree. During my second year at UCL, I tutored mathematics and physics to a student in her penultimate year of high school.
After my bachelor's degree, I read a master's degree in mathematics at the University of Oxford and graduated with distinction.
I am now in the process of applying for Ph.Ds in mathematics in the UK, and I hope to start one in September 2023.

Mathematics is a language that is very powerful in discussing many different ideas and subjects, like the sciences. During a tutoring session, I aim to help a student understand how an idea he/she finds challenging can be enlightened by discussing it using this language. I think that it is extremely beneficial for students to realise mathematics is a language, as it answers the sometimes elusive question "what are we trying to do", and also provides a glimpse into how useful and elegant mathematics is. I attempt to highlight this in the ideas or problems the student brings to the sessions.
Tutoring is also about exploring different methods of learning and finding which ones resonate most with the student. There are many ways to learn sciences, from the empirical approach (common in UK education) to the structural approach (common in French education). I am here to explore this spectrum with them so that the tutoring sessions enriches his/her understanding of the subjects, but also his/her approach to learning.
I usually ask the student to send me exercise or material they are struggling with in advance so that I can plan the session accordingly. I typically teach students from grades 9-12. I think that the length of the tutorial sessions should be determined in discussion with the student, but generally, I organise sessions between 30 and 90 minutes long.
If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I hope to be able to share my understanding of and enthusiasm for the subject with you!
