About Heather

Hi! I'm Heather! I am passionate about the Science of Reading, Equity and Inclusion. I love movies and love to read about women who were spies in World War 2. I play piano, love to spend time in Nature, and love being silly and having fun! I am kind and don't judge anyone. We all learn differently and I think each person's brain is AMAZING! I have ADHD and teach meditation as one of my jobs to help people relax. Not many people know that reading is not a natural act. Our brains are literally designed to read symbols, not human language. By doing specific tasks, we can work together to get the three parts of the brain involved with reading to talk to each other by creating new neural pathways. This is what the Science of Reading is all about-understanding how humans read and working with our brains to help us read properly, based on scientific research.

About the lesson

I start with Literacy Assessments to pinpoint issues with Reading and Literacy, then work with students on everything from correctly sounding out letters to correctly reading and writing words and sentences. This is all in alignment with the Science of Reading. We cover reading, writing, spelling and grammar. I am fun, compassionate and understanding. I am an advocate for my students.

The assessments I use are: 1. The SRA Placement Test for an idea of speed and pronunciation. 2. The Phonological Awareness Screening Test (PAST): a valid and reliable assessment of phonological awareness that takes 5-8 minutes to administer.
