Hello! I am a fourth-year teacher recently returning from teaching in Australia. I have taught everything from K-12 (except for high school English and Social Studies) either in my own classroom setting, tutoring, or substitute teaching. Prior to my internship experience in university, I strictly had experience in teaching mathematics and science. However, when I entered my internship, my teaching assignment allowed me to explore the world of literacy. As a “math junkie,” literacy pedagogy was an unknown and overwhelming world. However, after jumping head first into this realm of teaching, and adapting to the pedagogical changes that come along with it, I feel that my pedagogy in mathematics has become more refined and well-rounded. I strongly believe vocabulary to the world of mathematics is vital to success in it. Much of my pedagogy now starts with the foundations of vocabulary, which in gives students a bigger picture and therefore deeper understanding prior to attempting the processes and algorithms that much of math entails. This philosophy is one that I can transfer directly into teaching the sciences.
