About Beatrice

Hello! My name is Beatrice, I am Italian, and I am a graduate student in biomedical neuroscience planning on working in research afterwards.
I first graduated in Psychology at the University of Surrey (England) and am currently completing my MSc at the University of Mons (Belgium), and yes, I do love travelling!
As you can guess, school has been an important part of my life, but not the only one - I love languages, movies, and painting and I have always worked during university! - Because of this, I have decided to share my knowledge and help other students to improve not only their grades but also their time management. I think this is vital to ensure you can dedicate time to what you love, including extracurricular activities that I believe will help you choose a future job or university.

About the lesson

I am addressing middle and high school students (but if you're a university student and would like some help with time management or study techniques, I am also very happy to help!)

Based on my past experience as a university tutor, my lessons are organized according to the needs and preferences of the student. I want to clarify that my intent goes beyond teaching content and I try to provide the tools to independently learn any subject and to organize your time effectively, so you can both get the grades you want and make time for activities beyond school.

1. During our first meeting, I make sure I understand your goal and your path, for example by asking what you have been struggling with, why that is, and what you have already tried to do. From there, we define your expectations for the lessons, so we can monitor your progress and, if needed, change the "teaching" method.

2. Once your needs and objectives have been defined, I focus on the content to teach you and explain it with various techniques. These include using examples to illustrate a concept, audiovisual material, you explaining the content to me, and scenarios where the acquired knowledge must be. For example, if you have to learn foreign vocabulary about the house, I could ask you to pretend to be a real estate agent and describe a house to me, a potential buyer. Or, for more complex material such as notions of history in a foreign language, I could ask you to imagine yourself as a Paris citizen living during the french revolution and recount your experience.

3. At the end of each lesson, we make an "action plan", where you describe a) what you will do in preparation for the next lesson b) how you will do it (for example by reviewing the contents explained in class, or by doing homework or exercises I suggested) and c) by when you will do it. This way, you know exactly how to prepare for the next lesson, which in general also helps in studying more effectively. Finally, either at the end of the lesson or before the next one, we agree on what to work on during the following lesson.

4. At the beginning of the next lesson, I will ask you for some feedback on the methods I have used and if they were useful. If not, we will use other techniques to ensure you can reach your goals. Next, we review the action plan made previously (was the action plan completed? if now, why?). Finally, we work on the contents to learn.

5. Finally, if you wish, I can suggest study methods and time management techniques. In my experience (having studied, followed extracurricular activities and worked at the same time), these skills are fundamental for your academic and professional success.

6. What I have described here is a fairly general method and it will be adapted to your preferences for a personalized approach.
