About Shayan

Outside of tutoring, I’m a pretty relaxed and approachable person. Having only recently finished university myself, I still remember what it’s like to be on the student side of things — including the pressure of exams, confusing lessons and trying to figure out how to revise effectively. I enjoy working with young people and try to make lessons comfortable and informal enough that students aren’t afraid to ask questions, say they don’t understand something, or get things wrong. For me, tutoring should build confidence as much as it builds knowledge.

About the lesson

Hi, I’m Shayan! I’m a GCSE and A-Level Maths & Physics tutor with around 7 years of tutoring experience, and I recently graduated from the University of Birmingham with an MSci in Physics. I’ve been tutoring since I was 16, both privately on a 1-to-1 basis and teaching groups through a tutoring company. As part of my university degree, I also gained classroom teaching experience teaching A-Level students at a sixth-form college. I achieved Grade 9s at GCSE and A*s at A-Level in the subjects I now teach.

My approach comes largely from my own experience as a student. I went to a state school where we didn’t always have permanent teachers for some subjects, and I personally never found that I was able to learn particularly well from lessons at school. I often found explanations too technical or not explained in a way that made sense to me, so I taught myself using revision guides and past papers, achieving Grade 9s at GCSE and A*s at A-Level. That experience now shapes the way I tutor: I teach from a student’s perspective, breaking difficult ideas down and explaining them at the student’s level before building up to the technical detail. I also don’t just teach the content — I teach students the methods I used myself to learn independently, revise effectively and achieve top grades, even when the teaching or support they receive at school is lacking. My aim is to give students the tools to achieve strong grades independently, rather than becoming reliant on a tutor.

My lessons are completely flexible around the student — they can be as long as needed and can take place at your home, online, or at an agreed location. My teaching style and pace are tailored to the individual, and I’m happy to be as patient as necessary. I’ll teach a topic with as many explanations, examples and questions as it takes until the student genuinely understands it. From there, it’s about practice and repetition: we’ll work through questions until the student can consistently answer them correctly and confidently before moving on. I’ll also set work between lessons and start the next session by checking their understanding, so we know whether they’re ready to progress or whether we need to keep drilling.
