About Hamish
Award-winning New Zealand Jazz artist, Hamish Smith, flows with rhythmic inventiveness and a unique groove-centric approach. He has been described by NEA (National Endowment Award ) Jazz Master, Todd Barkan, as “a modern marvel - one of the great young bassists in the world.” Currently living in New York City, Mr. Smith has quickly become a highly sought-after musician. His career highlights include tours, performances and recordings with world class artists such as Paquito D’Rivera, Dayna Stephens, Miguel Zenon, Manuel Valera, Michael Rodriguez, Benito González, Elio Villafranca, Diego Urcola and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Mr. Smith is also a founding member of the collaborative group, Immigrantet, along with Nicola Caminiti and Juan Diego Villalobos.
After having been an influential member of the New Zealand music scene, Mr. Smith received a Full Tuition Scholarship to attend the Manhattan School of Music, which led to his move to New York City in 2018. After his freshman year of college, he was recruited to play in the quintet of NEA Jazz Master and fifteen time GRAMMY Award-winning artist, Paquito D’Rivera. Mr. Smith has recently graduated from Manhattan School of Music and continues to play with many groups throughout the United States and internationally. He thrives in providing a sonic foundation with his formidable sound echoing the vibrations of New Zealand’s roots.

My aim with teaching is to guide students on a path to musical growth, by setting and understanding goals as a performer.
Four main areas of concentration that I usually focus on with students include:
1) Bass line construction (walking bass, two-feel, latin bass lines, pop/funk bass lines)
2) Melodic statements (learning melodies of jazz standard repertoire, working out of etude books to grasp an understanding of improvisation)
3) Rhythmic choices (working with the metronome to improve time, listening exercises to develop a better "time feel", playing in different time signatures)
4) Ensemble skills (reading music, sight reading, playing with drummers and pianists, the function of the bass player in different styles of music)
