About Samuel
I am a multi-disciplinary artist with a background in music and film. As a musician, my background is entirely self-taught - I play guitar, bass, piano, synthesiser and have been producing music on Ableton Live for around 10 years. I have written two albums and play bass in a London dream rock band. I am also a UAL Film Practice Graduate and enjoy discussing film literature, communication and analysing techniques used in the medium including sound design, writing, and direction. I have helped create numerous short films, either as a writer, director, sound operator, editor, or sound designer. I am always learning myself, as I love to learn. Musical or film based discussions always brighten my day and I take a lot of interest in the technical aspects of art - as well, of course, as the creative and expressive! This is why when, at 16, I found myself compelled to make music, but unable to afford lessons and with no one else to teach me, I started to delve into every resource I could find. I find the best way to learn isn't just to recite a complicated thing you have read - it is to learn by doing.

I am still new to tutoring, but my previous experience has mainly been providing constructive feedback to a pupil's existing work, or tackling a very specific issue they are having head on, primarily a technical skill (i.e. tuning an instrument, tension, scales, software questions). I think the best approach to education is to treat an issue or lecture as a discussion. A pupil may listen to as much information as they can take in, but without interaction, or pushing their interest and interactivity, my role would merely be reduced to a video online. I wish to not just solve a problem, but make sure a pupil is ready to solve that problem themselves the next time it arises. Due to my experience, I think I would be best helping coach a beginner in their field - mostly adults. The digital age we are living in provides an excellent display of resources for someone looking to develop their skills, but I find the first steps for many are best with a guided hand. So much of playing an instrument, for instance, is down to the feel and establishing good habits - something that, when I was starting out, I felt videos, images, endless googling couldn't fix.
