About Natalie
I've been a music student--and later a professional musician--since the age of 8! I worked on piano all the way through school and earned my Associate certificate in piano performance from the Toronto Conservatory by the end of high school. I've majored in music and music theory in three universities for my Bachelor's (piano/history/theory), my Master's (theory), and I went to England to do musicology research for my MPhil degree. All through these years I've been privileged to be a teacher in theory for beginners all the way to university-level students, as well as a piano teacher for young children and teens preparing for their examinations. I also love teaching piano to adults. It's been meaningful and a great deal of fun, and I look forward to continuing to pass on what knowledge I have to you!

My method for teaching music theory is first to determine what level the student is (beginner or advanced, etc.) and work from there. When we're talking about a certain type of chord, progression, or technique in theory, I always use many examples from the repertoire--and play them!-- so that the theory comes alive, and we can see how it functions in actual music. I can also use repertoire that interests the student most, for example, pieces that he/she is working on at the moment. Theory "comes alive" this way, and its link to understanding how to make live music becomes clearer. There are also practical applications to studying theory: the student benefits from a deeper understanding of music from different historical periods, as well as being able to memorize their music more effectively and securely.
