About Emily

Hello, welcome! I’m Emily, and I'm mentoring as a side hustle and just starting out. About me, I'm a 3rd-year Psychology student at UBC. I was born and raised in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and came to Canada when I was 14. I understand both cultures and can help bridge that gap in your learning. I will be upfront that I don't have any formal experiences yet. My most relevant experience is probably Peer mentoring for Grade 8 middle-schoolers for 1 year in Arts and Drama classes. I also help my friends study often if that is relevant. As someone who has learned and is learning new languages myself, I understand how intimidating, expensive, and tiring it can be — I want to make it affordable, accessible, flexible, personal, usable, and most importantly, fun for you! I will be your casual, friendly, adaptable tutor who will tailor everything to you and match your pace :) More about me, outside of school, I enjoy gaming, music, languages, drawing, cooking, baking, anime and comics, badminton, swimming. You can consider my background, interest, personality if it can be relevant and helpful to your learning.

About the lesson

I’m fluent in both Vietnamese and English, and I speak with a Southern accent. I’m less familiar with the Northern and Central accents, but I can share what I know if you're interested!

Since I’m just getting started, I don’t follow a strict curriculum yet. Lessons are casual, open-ended, and fully tailored to you. Whether you're an adult, teen, or child (yes, I can try working with little kids too!), I’ll do my best to adapt accordingly.

We can focus on: Alphabet, tones, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, conversation, reading, writing, translation. Everyday topics: food, travel, music, culture, lifestyle, directions, time, hobbies, school, sports, shopping, etc.
→ Basically, anything relevant to your goals, lifestyle, or interests.

Where & How:
+ Online: Zoom, Google Meet, or Discord (your choice)
+ In-person: I live near UBC and use public transit, so I’m open to meeting within 5km of UBC if you strongly prefer face-to-face lessons (unfortunately I can’t host at my place).

Lesson length:
Flexible! 30 mins (online only), 1 hour, 1.5, or 2+ hours — we’ll find what works best for both of us.

I'm open to feedback and always looking to improve. As I gain more experience, I’ll refine my tutoring style and add more structure. But if you’re looking for a friendly, beginner tutor who’s patient and adaptable, I’d love to help you explore Vietnamese at your own pace!

First 1-hour trial class for free! Next 1-hour for just $5! From 3rd hour and onwards, here are the rates:
+ 1 hour: $15 (Phở đặc biệt)
+ 5-hour package: $70 (Nguyên tuần không sợ đói)
+ 10-hour package: $130 (Giúp mình trả học phí)

~ Teaching materials: No set materials or textbooks for now! Lessons are based on what you want to learn. We'll wing it — and I’ll pull up content and materials on the go :) I can probably provide you materials and practice too. You don't need to purchase anything extra.
