About Mai Phuong

I am Vietnamese, but I have spent much of my life traveling, living in different countries and learning about their languages, people and cultures. I have always wanted to become a polyglot, a journey that is still very much ongoing! Along the way, I discovered an enduring passion for languages, history, culture and human communication.

Vietnamese is my native language, English is my second language, and I have also studied Russian and Mandarin. Being a language learner myself has taught me something important: learning a language is about much more than memorizing vocabulary and grammar. You begin to understand how another culture thinks, jokes, expresses affection, shows respect and sees the world.

That is what I want to share through Vietnamese.

Vietnamese is a fascinating language shaped by centuries of history, from indigenous traditions and dynastic Vietnam to Chinese linguistic influence, French colonialism and the increasingly global Vietnam of today. Even within the country, traveling from North to Central to South reveals different accents, expressions, vocabulary and ways of communicating. I want my students to discover this richness rather than learn Vietnamese as if there were only one “correct” way to speak it.

I also bring previous tutoring experience from Vietnam, where I taught Vietnamese literature and English to children aged 6–13. I am currently completing my Bachelor of Criminology at Monash University, which has further strengthened my interest in people, society and culture.

Most importantly, I want my lessons to come from genuine curiosity. Ask me why Vietnamese people say something a certain way, why an expression exists, why your Vietnamese friend speaks differently from someone you met in another region, or what a phrase tells us about Vietnamese culture. If I can help you not only speak Vietnamese, but understand the people behind the language, then I have done my job.

About the lesson

My lessons focus on helping you learn Vietnamese as it is actually spoken, while building a strong foundation in pronunciation, tones, vocabulary and grammar.

As a native Vietnamese speaker, I am comfortable with the different dialects, accents, tones and cultural nuances across Vietnam, particularly the differences between Northern, Central and Southern Vietnamese. I can help you understand these variations rather than leaving you confused when real Vietnamese sounds different from what you learned in a textbook.

Lessons are personalised around your goals. We can focus on everyday conversation, pronunciation and tones, reading and writing, Vietnamese culture, travel, communicating with family and friends, or more structured language learning.

For beginners, I explain concepts clearly in English and build confidence gradually. For more advanced learners, we can use Vietnamese more intensively and work on sounding natural rather than simply being grammatically correct.

I also understand the challenges of learning another language myself, so I aim to create lessons where making mistakes is part of the process. Whether you are learning Vietnamese from scratch, reconnecting with your heritage, or simply want to speak more naturally, I will adapt each lesson to you.
