About Alan
My name is Alan and when I retired from Uni teaching, I took up standard guitar lessons and thereafter focused on bass playing. I play bass for a band and every week, I voluntarily play standard guitar (chords and notes) for residents of an old age home. One day I hope to emulate Vicky McClure's "Our Dementia Choir". Nelson Mandela said that "music has the power to heal". It also induces a wonderful feeling of accomplishment when one is able to play a favorite song on an instrument. I won't muck about. I will be able to tell in the first lesson if the student could succeed in playing an instrument and I am prepared to be brutally honest in this respect. The student would also be able to assess if s/he wants to carry on with me after this first free lesson. I would teach by playing my own guitar over Zoom or MS Teams and the student will need to have his/hers handy. If the student is in Perth, s/he can come to my house, north of the river. I can advise on what equipment to start out with.

One-on-one online practical guitar lessons. I have been playing standard guitar for 5 years and bass guitar for 3 years. I play bass guitar for a garage band that plays the odd gig - eg., Neergabby Fireworks, big birthdays, etc. I teach beginners open and barre chords and progress ultimately to reading a music sheet and playing the notes for a song. I teach bass guitar beginners root notes, perfect 5ths and bass chords and major scales, progressing ultimately to playing bass lines for certain iconic songs eg., Another Brick in the Wall, Seven Nation Army, Gimme Shelter, etc. This is done via tabs so as not to confuse with standard guitar music notes. I learned the hard way and can transmit my knowledge to beginners who are serious about learning guitar, not wanting to be a rock star after 2 lessons. I had standard guitar lessons for 2 years and I am continuing having bass lessons after 3 years. A lesson lasts 1 hour and the cost is $50 per hour. The first lesson is free but of 30 minutes duration. In that lesson, an assessment can be made as to whether the student is capable of playing a guitar and co-ordinating strumming or notes with fretboard action. I am familiar with, and use, benchmark apps like Ultimate Guitar Pro and Mobile Sheets Pro. My preference is for late high school and adult students.

Excellent! Alan is a good guy, knowledgeable and patient. I learnt a bit from our introduction lesson.
Perfect! I booked Alan to meet with my partner for guitar lessons as a birthday gift. What a great idea this turned out to be! My partner was thrilled and described Alan as easy to talk to, encouraging, and passionate about guitar playing and teaching. He can’t wait to continue lessons with Alan.

Alan is a very skilful and patient guitar teacher. I have learnt alot from him so far. He knows a wide range of songs, I am thoroughly enjoying my lessons.
Alan is one of the most amazing teacher who has taught me. He makes it really easy for me to understand hard lessons and he always use different approaches to make the learning process easier. He’s very kind and would go a long way to help the students as well. I highly recommend him as a teacher.
I was taught by Alan during my Diploma days when I first arrived at uni abroad. I have now graduated after almost 3 years and Alan has been one of the best tutors I have met. He has a unique approach in teaching most memorably by connecting it with his vast experiences. He is also generous in sharing his knowledge-thirst students. I was also given good advices for things outside the classroom which turned out to be invaluable. We maintain a very good relationship and still keep in contact until this day.
