About Alan
Hi. I've been a primary school teacher for 20 years and I spent a lot of time teaching in Y6. I know how hard learning can be and know students can feel disheartened when they just don't get it, but others do. My aim is to give all my students a feeling of pride in what they do, a feeling that you can do it and that confidence to tell others that you can do it. But most importantly my aim is make you feel safe about your learning and dispel any anxieties about your own ability. If you don't understand something I teach, then I'll teach it a different way, listening carefully to what you say and use my 20 years experience to unpick what's holding you back. My hope is you leave my sessions feeling confident and happy about what we covered. That's when I know I've done a good job.

1:1 tutoring can be daunting for young people so I approach my sessions in a friendly and kind manner. I've worked with many different young people over the years, including working with young people with SEN. With my experience, I'm able to identify the steps needed for the young person to learn what is required best, and we learn at an accelerated but manageable pace. I was a primary school teacher and leader for 20 years. I currently work in the alternative education sector as a teacher and mentor. I'm tutoring because I enjoy it and I hope to pass on my love of learning to my student. My sessions can be 30 minutes or 1 hour. If online, I prefer to break them up into two 30 minute sessions with a 5 minute break in the middle to give the student (and me!) a brain break. I've found we get much more done that way. Or we can just have shorter 30 minute session at half the given hourly rate. If in person, I'll still have a short 5 minute break in the middle so my sessions will be 1hr 5 minutes.
