About Joshua

My teaching style is hands-on, visual, and highly practical. I believe students learn best when they can see a technique demonstrated, understand why it works, and then immediately practice it themselves with guidance and feedback.

I like to combine traditional instruction with real-world examples from accomplished working artists. In tattooing especially, I have personally learned a great deal by studying video lessons and demonstrations from prominent tattoo artists, analyzing their techniques, testing those methods myself, and incorporating what genuinely improved my own work. I use that same approach when mentoring students: showing them strong professional examples, breaking down what the artist is doing, and then helping the student apply those principles through direct practice rather than simply watching passively.

Depending on the subject, lessons can include drawing exercises with paper and pencil, digital composition and reference development, oil-painting studies, or hands-on tattoo practice using synthetic skin. For tattoo students, I can demonstrate concepts such as line control, hand speed, needle depth, consistent saturation, shading, value transitions, color layering, and building realistic forms, then allow the student to practice those techniques in a controlled environment while I observe and correct their approach.

With drawing and painting students, I use a similar process. We may study a professional demonstration or reference, isolate one specific skill such as proportion, edges, color temperature, value, or texture, and then practice that skill before incorporating it into a larger finished piece. This keeps students from becoming overwhelmed and allows them to see measurable improvement from lesson to lesson.

I also believe strongly in explaining the reasoning behind technique. Instead of simply telling a student to make a line darker, blend an area differently, or change a color, I want them to understand what visual problem we are solving. Over time, that develops artistic judgment and gives the student the ability to critique and improve their own work independently.

My role as a mentor is ultimately to shorten the learning curve. I share the techniques, demonstrations, exercises, mistakes, and problem-solving methods that have helped me improve professionally, while giving each student enough hands-on repetition to turn that information into an actual skill.

Hello, my name is Joshua Cole. I’m a professional artist and tattoo artist with years of hands-on experience working in realism, drawing, oil painting, digital composition, and tattoo design. I currently own and operate a tattoo and piercing studio in Las Vegas, where much of my work centers on realistic drawing, value, composition, anatomy, and translating artwork from an initial concept into a finished piece.

As an art tutor, I can work with students at different skill levels and tailor lessons around both their goals and the fundamentals they need to progress. I believe strongly in teaching students not only what to do, but why a technique works, so they can eventually make confident artistic decisions on their own.

In oil painting, I can teach drawing and proportion, value structure, color theory and mixing, layering, glazing, edge control, blending, brushwork, realistic light and shadow, skin tones, and methods for building a painting gradually from an accurate foundation to a polished finished work.

I can also teach traditional drawing and realism, including observational drawing, portraits, anatomy, perspective, shading, textures, rendering three-dimensional form, and developing stronger control over line, value, and composition.

My experience in tattooing gives me another perspective that can be especially useful to students interested in illustration or professional art. I can teach tattoo-oriented design principles such as creating readable compositions, designing artwork around the human form, linework, black-and-gray realism, color theory, reference development, and adapting an illustration so that it works as a tattoo rather than simply as a drawing.

I also work with digital composition and can help students learn how to combine and organize references, develop concepts digitally, experiment with layouts, lighting and values, and use digital tools as part of the planning process for traditional paintings, drawings, illustrations, and tattoo designs.

My teaching style is patient, practical, and highly visual. I like breaking complicated artwork into understandable stages and helping students identify exactly what is preventing a piece from looking the way they want it to. My goal is to give students techniques they can immediately apply while also developing the observational and problem-solving skills that will continue improving their artwork long after the lesson is over.

I would be excited to bring my professional experience into a tutoring environment and help students develop both stronger technical skills and greater confidence in their own artistic voice.
