About Oliver

I am an extremely well-rounded mathematician and a highly effective communicator of mathematics. As well as a decade of online tutoring experience, I also have a formal teaching qualification and two maths degrees including a research degree at Oxford! I also have experience of using mathematics to solve real-world problems; particularly those in nuclear energy.

About the lesson

My teaching style is incredibly flexible and adaptable to the student's needs, and I check in very regularly with my students during our sessions to make sure they are getting as much value from the session as possible. I know the A-level syllabus so well that I can more or less solve (almost) any problem on the spot. I like to make my explanations visual, engaging and tech-savvy, tapping into as many different tools as possible (such as interactive geometry applets, calculator emulators or computer algebra systems) to make my point clear. At the same time, I am a very patient and empathetic tutor, who is happy to offer multiple different ways of explaining the same concept. I also like to encourage hidden "meta-skills" that teachers don't necessarily reinforce, for example, double-checking answers and using technology wherever possible. My framework is also chosen such that it makes it as easy as possible for the student to demonstrate their understanding real-time during the sessions, and also to bring things to the next session. This approach encourages students to take responsibility, which will serve them well at university.

My lessons are typically 1 hour in length, but I can also do 90 minutes or 2 hours.

I have over 10 years of experience of online tutoring (long since before COVID hit), mostly in teaching AS- and A-Level Maths and Further Maths. I am a fully-qualified teacher, and I posess two mathematics degrees, including a research degree from Oxford. I also have experience in covering content and problems that are beyond the typical high school syllabus, and are aimed at stretching the most capable maths students and helping them with Oxford and Cambridge admissions exams. Whilst I have not formally taught courses offered internationally, including IB and AP mathematics, there is a lot of overlap with the content covered at A-Level, so I should easily be able to help with this.

I mostly teach A-Level and undergraduate STEM students, but I am happy to make exceptions on a case-by-case basis (e.g. GCSE or below).

Details

My rates are £50 per hour for A-level Maths, Further Maths, Oxford MAT and STEP lessons. I also offer mock Oxbridge maths interviews at a similar hourly rate.

I am happy to negotiate other hourly rates on a case-by-case basis for subjects that I am knowledgeable of but haven't formally taught before, namely physics and programming.
