About Tom
My name is Tom, I’m a recent graduate from the University of Oxford, having studied for an integrated master’s degree in chemistry, achieving a high II.i. (Firsts in 1st and 2nd year, high 2.i’s in 3rd and 4th year). Whilst at Oxford, I was also an academic scholar (for excellent performance in exams) as well as taking on pastoral roles as the New College’s chemistry subject rep, and later being my year group’s representative on the CJCC (Chemist’s joint consultative committee), representing around 200 students to the department. Prior to university, I studied 11 GCSEs, in which I achieved 11A*s (incl. maths and English), and at A level, I studied Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and English Literature, where I attained 4A*’s, including placing in the 99.8th percentile for AQA Chemistry A-level.

I specialise in teaching maths, further maths and chemistry from GCSE to A-level, across all ability levels, and also have experience teaching physics and biology at GCSE level too. My approach to teaching is holistic, no two students are the same, and so I believe neither should be my approach. For some students, the focus needs to be heavily on building their understanding of the material and for others it needs to be on developing their confidence in what they already know and how to apply it. My favourite part of tutoring is that it’s as much a challenge for me to figure out how best to tailor my approach to each student as it is for them to grasp complex new topics. The best moments of all are when we both share the ‘lightbulb moment’, where I’ve found the best way to help them understand and learn, and the topic that’s been plaguing them finally clicks. I care about each of my students deeply, both in providing academic support but also being able to provide reassurance and helping them believe in their abilities, and particularly love seeing the pride on their faces when they tell me they’ve improved a grade on their test, or their teacher has written to their parents to congratulate them on their notable improvement.
