About Sam

I am a friendly and hard-working professional musician and teacher based in London, with a degree in jazz performance from Trinity Laban Conservatoire. I love all kinds of music and am enthusiastic about helping others enjoy playing as much as I do.

I started playing the saxophone at the age of 10 years old, and immediately developed a passion for playing and improving. Having achieved distinctions in grade 8 for both jazz saxophone (Trinity) and classical saxophone (ABRSM) by the age of 17, I applied to Trinity Laban conservatoire in order to learn from some of the best saxophone players in the UK.

As a teacher, I have experience teaching all ages and levels, from adults and children picking up the instrument for the first time, all the way up to fellow Trinity students and aspiring professionals, as well as casual learners who just want to play for a bit of fun. I believe the most important thing when playing music is to enjoy it, and I try to emphasise this when teaching all my students, no matter what their goal. I also teach in schools and have a DBS check.

As a performer, I play many different styles of music including jazz, classical, funk, soul, disco, RnB, hip-hop, house and pop. I play at many established venues across London, with highlights including Pizza Express Live Soho, Ninety-One Living Room, and festivals such as We Out Here, Wilderness and Greenbelt.

About the lesson

Having played many different styles of music in different settings, my aim is for lessons to be tailor-made for each student, with a focus on enjoyment. Playing the saxophone is my passion and I want to share this with all my students, helping them to develop a connection with their instrument, and most importantly have fun playing it. I teach at any level from complete beginner up to aspiring professional, and place an emphasis on being patient and understanding whilst trying to get the best out of my students.

I graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London with a 2:1 in the BMus jazz performance course. I specialise in teaching improvisation which can be applied in jazz, soul, funk, disco and popular music, however I have a distinction in grade 8 classical saxophone and am equally comfortable teaching classical music and helping students succeed in ABRSM grade exams.

Lessons can be designed to include any of the following concepts:
-Improvisation
-Tone/Sound
-Technique/Fluency
-Sight reading
-Theory/Harmony
