About Joel

Hello!

I am Joel,  a violinist and educator with more than 8 years of teaching experience.

Based in London, I perform internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. I trained at the Royal College of Music where I recently completed an Artist Diploma (highest level of taught postgraduate study). I also hold a First Class Batchelor degree and Masters with Distinction, having previously completed the Royal College of Music Junior Department.

As a dedicated teacher, I aim to share my experience with students of all ages and abilities in a thoughtful, open-minded way — helping each player grow in musicality, confidence, and individuality. I have extensive experience tutoring violin students across all levels, from beginners to advanced players.

Since 2022, I have worked in various educational environments, including private tutoring, music schools, and higher education. I have served as a supporting tutor for undergraduate students at the Royal College of Music and as a private practice supervisor, guiding students through their individual practice routines.

In addition to private lessons, I have been involved with organisations such as the Royal College of Music Teaching Service, MuseCool, Lycaeum Music, and Mablois Music School in Dulwich, London, where I have taught violin in addition to piano and music theory.

I am wholly committed to creating a supportive and engaging learning environment that nurtures both the technical skills and musicality of each student.

My lessons always take place in a friendly, supportive environment.

Central to my teaching approach is the desire to cultivate in my students a love and joy for music making, whatever their ambitions or commitment may be. Each student is unique and has a unique relationship with music. Consequently, I do not believe in bringing a predetermined agenda, but instead allow the aims of the student to inform the trajectory of the lessons. For some, this results in rigorous training to attain the highest standards; for others, a more relaxed learning environment. At whatever stage of development, I work with the student to establish a pathway towards their goals which they will find both stimulating and fulfilling.

Music transcends time and place, bringing human beings together from every culture and background through universal language. It encapsulates every element of life - from history and geography to culture and art, channelling the intellectual and the emotional. Learning to play an instrument is the first step to unlocking this fascinating and vast multi-dimensional world. Being involved in the process of helping others to take these steps and experience the joy of music making is the most exciting element of my role as a teacher. I am dedicated to inspiring others to uncover the values to be cultivated through music in addition to realising their full artistic potential.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I vividly remember falling in love with the violin in the middle of a student concert when I was ten. I was performing, and suddenly everything clicked - why I practiced, why I took lessons. I was sharing music with an audience, and all the hard work felt worthwhile. Helping others discover that same passion is now one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I love the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. I used to listen to an album of his Six Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin once a week - three hours, non-stop. These days, I’m fortunate enough to be able to play them myself, which is even better.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I always try to keep students both challenged and inspired without becoming overwhelmed. In many ways, the composers set the bar. Mozart and Beethoven, for instance, can take a lifetime to truly understand and express. But that’s part of what makes music so powerful: it’s an endless journey of discovery.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Mastery of any instrument demands total dedication and love. The violin is definitely one of the more challenging instruments, but the rewards of meeting that challenge far outweigh the difficulties.
  • What are your keys to success?

    Endless curiosity and patience.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

Running workshops for young people around the world has had a profound effect on how I see both performing and teaching. I’ll never forget the joy on the faces of students during a workshop in the Philippines for vulnerable children and teenagers. It was a beautiful reminder of how deeply music can connect, uplift, and empower.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

Teaching the instrument and art form I love is both a privilege and a responsibility. Music has shaped my life, and I strive to make it a positive, personal experience for each of my students. Helping them discover their voice and guiding them through the many benefits that music brings - discipline, creativity, joy - is what motivates me most.
