About Joel
I believe the best teachers have three qualities: proven success in their subject, a mastery of learning as its own skill, and a genuine care for their students. That is who I aspire to be. At school I experienced the same struggles as everyone - trying to learn content, stay on top of assessments, manage stress, make terrifying life decisions... - but overcame these to achieve a perfect 99.95 ATAR and a deluge of prizes including Certificate of Excellence and General Exhibition. Having brilliant and fun mentors made a world of difference to this outcome! My love of math and physics led me to study Mechanical Engineering, but my passion for music pulled me in a different direction and I've been lucky enough to build a career as an orchestral conductor. Meanwhile, I have also developed a passion for helping young people and amassed 15+ years of teaching experience, with students consistently expressing their appreciation for my clarity of explanations and personal investment in them as people. Being a high-achiever, I very much speak the language of students undertaking the hardest math subjects and aiming for those top results; but I also love helping students who are struggling with their classroom experience and need someone to work with their unique learning style and show them the light. In any case, I provide a positive and supportive environment to help you fulfill your potential.

Think of me like a coach who not only teaches you maths, but also develops your self-improvement skills more generally, enhancing your handling of all academic challenges, and other aspects of life.
Whether you are having difficulty at school and need new perspectives to help boost your confidence, or you are a high achiever determined to master your subjects, I will develop personalised lesson plans allowing you to achieve your goals, and maybe even enjoy the process!
This includes help with school work, specific questions, revising concepts requiring extra attention, extending you beyond the current curriculum, practice assessments, and more. All tracked in detail with assigned tasks and feedback.
Lessons are online through Zoom. Consistent weekly lessons are recommended with a preference for Sundays. 60 minutes for Y7-10 and 90 minutes for Y11-12 is advised. 1 to 1 and group lessons are available.

When I first found out Joel got a 99.95 ATAR, I thought he’d be way too smart to get what I was struggling with in maths. But honestly, he’s super friendly and explains things in a way that actually makes sense. I’ve been working with him for over a year now, and not only are my grades up, but I actually like maths now.
