About Vanessa

I'm Vanessa Aitken. I have a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Texas at El Paso (United States), and an MSc and a BSc in Chemistry from Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (Chile). I have been teaching for 9 years and have worked with more than 500 students.

I was a teaching assistant at USM from 2017 to 2022, and from 2022 I taught the Organic Chemistry laboratory at UTEP, in English, with more than 100 students per year. I have four articles published in international journals.

I work well with students who struggle with chemistry or who come to the subject afraid of it. I explain things as many times as needed, without rushing and without making fun of anyone's questions.

About the lesson

Online Chemistry and Biology classes for high school students and PAES Science preparation, by video call with a digital whiteboard.

First class: I use the free 30 minutes as a planning session. We decide how many classes are needed and how often, what kind of work is needed (course content, exercises or both), and we review the syllabus, the school textbooks and the teacher's materials, so the classes follow exactly what will be assessed. If you prefer to start working straight away, those 30 minutes can be added to the first class: a first session of an hour and a half for the price of one hour.

What we work on, depending on what is needed: reinforcing content and preparing for school tests; catching up on missed material, worksheets and homework, step by step; and PAES Science preparation in the Chemistry and Biology modules, with content, exercise technique, time management and practice tests reviewed together.

Chemistry topics: atomic structure and the periodic table, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, solutions, gases, acids and bases, chemical reactions and basic organic chemistry. Biology topics: the cell, genetics and heredity, human body systems, ecology, evolution and molecular biology.

I work well with students who struggle with chemistry or who come to the subject afraid of it. I explain things as many times as needed, without rushing and without making fun of anyone's questions. I don't hand over the answer: I teach how to get there, because that is what pays off in the test. After each session I send summaries, formula sheets and practice exercises.
