About Mart
I am a PhD student and 1st class honours MPhys graduate from the Cardiff University, passionate about mathematics and its application to the real world around us, which translates to my fascination with physics.
For the past three years of my PhD I have been demonstrating in undergraduate physics labs which allowed me to put my teaching skills into practice. I have tutored GCSE physics and maths for a couple years before starting my PhD and have seen improvement in understanding and a growth in grades. I had the pleasure of being a mentor for Cardiff Universitys Physics Mentoring Project, which enriched my skills with two sets of four month long training and provided experience working with a group of year 9 pupils to explore the role physics can play in their journies. I've completed an Open University course, 'Teaching Secondary Mathematics', which has been a great help in understanding how to not just lecture students, but to show tutees the value in what they're learning and inspire them to continue independently.
I have seen great results from my students and I hope to improve with every lesson I teach. I make sure to offer opportunity for feedback, on which I actively act.
I look forward to our lesson!

There are only so many ways to pass an exam. There are countless ways to solve a problem.
You do not need to memorise formulas and procedures. Once you understand why they exist, you'll be able to logically reason a solution, not just to a question asked in an exam, but any problem you may have!
Maths and physics is a world of play, and there are no questions that shouldn't be asked and explored. That's why I believe students should learn to ask their own questions. Not just answer them.
I believe it's important to get to know my students; how they learn, what they're interests are and what maths or physics means to them. That is a process that will take many lessons, but it's something I'd like to focus solely on during the first ten minutes or so of the first lesson.
Every lesson will look differently depending on the student, of course. If a student already has an active interest in maths, then I'm there to help them maintain and develop it, by exploring more difficult problems together, or focusing on exam technique.
If the student, on the other hand, has no natural interest in the subject, my job is to show them that it's not just another exam they're being forced to do. I believe developing a motivation for problem solving is incredibly useful in anything and everything they will ever want to do.
Finally, I want to know what I did that the students liked and learned from, and what was counterproductive. That way, next lesson can be even more fruitful!
