About Mitchell
Philosophy can be a daunting subject to approach considering the argumentative rigor, plethora of perspectives, and difficult writing inherent to the field. Having struggled to adapt to the field myself in the beginning of my academic career, I have developed methods to help students in their own personal philosophical endeavors. My work as a teacher's assistant at multiple universities has also taught me what institutions expect of their students, so I can provide guidance for those who wish to pursue philosophy academically as well. I make a strong commitment to professionalism, but that doesn't mean learning needs to be boring or stressful. Philosophical concepts are often explored artistically in media, so this can be a gateway into philosophical practice. As a tutor I adapt my teaching style and lesson plan to the student's needs and interests.

My lessons are designed to teach students how to interpret philosophical texts, write impactful and academically affluent philosophical papers, argumentatively mediate between opposing philosophical perspectives, use online resources to improve their research into the field, and improve their confidence when giving presentations. In other words, my lessons are designed to develop all the skills required to excel in philosophy courses at all levels of academia. I specialize in continental philosophy (Ancient Greek, modern existential philosophy, Kyoto School Japanese philosophy), and contemporary analytic philosophy related to cognitive science. A typical lesson plan may consist of determining the philosophical commitments of the student, selecting reading materials that both challenge and support those commitments, going through the readings together in detail to ensure the materials are correctly interpreted (may require short written summaries and/or responses), and helping the student to write an argumentative essay or create a presentation on the topic of choice. That said, the lesson plan for each student will be tailored to their specific needs. I also offer feedback and research assistance for students currently enrolled in philosophy courses.
