About Patrick Joseph

Informally, I have been offering Photoshop tips and training to friends for years, but now I'm looking to supplement my income as a freelance retoucher by offering my tutoring on a commercial basis. I have managed a small post production team, helped new retouchers develop their skills, developed new workflows and advised photographers on what's possible to achieve "in post". I have a degree in Fine Art and I first got into Photoshop as a way to achieve my student art projects. I started retouching professionally for a product photography company in 2008, initially cutting out mannequin shots before moving on to all aspects of photographic post production. As a freelancer I went on to work for a wide variety of clients, on subjects like food, fashion, portraiture, interiors, cars, electronics, cosmetics and jewellery. I learnt to automate repetitive tasks with Photoshop actions. When I reached the limits of what those could do, I taught myself to code in Adobe's language ExtendScript, developing scripts that take large batches of images and process them all differently at high speed.

About the lesson

I'm new to tutoring but I've worked in commercial photography as a retoucher for over 10 years. I think Photoshop is best learnt through doing, so I'd advise anyone approaching it to have some projects in mind, at least one image to work on, and we can go from there!

Joe helped me with some tuition on a specific project I had as an artist where I needed to composite some photos. His expertise in the field was clear and not only did I feel like I got the job done to a high standard, I learned more than I thought would be possible in just a few hours of tuition. He was very patient and kind with me, not jumping in to fix something obvious and bearing with me while I tried a few times to use the tools right. I've now got a much improved knowledge of colour and blending. Would happily hire Joe again anytime.
