About Alex

My name is Alex, originally from a small town in Belgium you probably never heard of. That’s where I’ve spent most of my life. The first part of my time there was focused on getting a degree in Electro-Mechanical Engineering, but after graduating, I actually wasn’t too keen on jumping into the overwhelming professional opportunities of such a career path right away – even though I felt like I was missing something. But I’m glad – really glad – I didn’t. I left for Chile, shipped my motorbike over, and started riding it up North. I eventually found out that rock climbing was kinda fun. So, I kept doing that. Driving. Climbing. For 11 months. Until I got to Canada. I worked for a year in BC – rope access in the city and snowmobile photography in Whistler – and took the road again, on this indestructible red bike that carried me for so long in the first place. Two more years dirtbagging around the US, Asia, Canada, Patagonia, Europe. I started guiding climbing in Vietnam and kayaking in Greenland. I was working freelance during the rest of the time. Building websites, translating, trading pictures for cams and portaledges. Meanwhile, I shoot the things I see. And I mean, I think I like that. I’m now guiding in Iceland few months a year, and the rest of time, I spend it trying to balance photography and exciting media projects, based here in Squamish, BC.

About the lesson

Hi! You have a camera in your closet that someone offered you for your birthday 3 years ago, and you still have no idea what all these buttons do? You've heard about aperture, shutter speed, ISO and all, but really… What does that even mean? I've been working in photography and videography for over 10 years now, working with the top leading brands in the outdoor industry such as Patagonia, The North Face, Black Diamond, Petzl, La Sportiva, … You want to learn outdoor photography? Portraits? Fashion? Travel? Doesn’t matter! These classes are really all about the full understanding of photography and is applicable to any style you’re aiming for. I've been teaching photography for over 5 years in person in Vancouver and I’m super stoked to finally take this to the next level and try to spread it out a little further! __________ There are 4 classes I offer, each one is between 2h and 3h30 depending how many students there are. The description of each class are here below. Each one of them is covering a very important topic. The goal is that at the end of the 4 classes, you would have a full control of your camera and master all the options. I'm teaching for that company (the Photo Academy) and extend my services by offering classes here in Squamish and online as well. Class 1 - Camera Settings Class 2 - Aperture and Depth of field Class 3 - Shutter speed and movement Class 4 - Light and focus You get to choose whichever class you are more interested in. If you want to end up with a full control and knowledge of your camera, I would advise to take the 4 of them as they all teach a very important part of mastering your camera. I can teach in English, French or potentially Spanish too! Feel free to contact me for more details.

I can't recommend Alex enough as a teacher. He is clearly passionate about photography, and proved to be incredibly knowledgeable in the workings of any camera. He is a patient teacher and always gives clear explanations and examples. His whole approach to photography is very inspiring, and his classes are well set up. He makes complicated theory approachable while exploring everything you need to know about how to use a camera on manual mode.
I had a great time learning from him and feel much more confident using a camera now.
