About Owain
Hi my name's Owain and I am in my first year of studying Physics and Astronomy at Durham University. I have spent my whole life up until now living in Cornwall which really fostered my love for the outdoors, particularly hiking and playing cricket. However, despite my love for the county it was never where I saw myself in the long term, with no top universities and fewer job opportunities in sectors I was interested in.
This really inspired me to invest in my education, leading to my GCSEs where I put enormous effort into getting the grades necessary to attend Cornwall School of Maths and Science (CSMS). There I was amongst like-minded people and we pushed each other to get the best out of our 2 years there, which I believe I truly did. At CSMS, I completed my Gold DofE award with an expedition up Snowdon, did work experience with a Radiotherapy team in the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, conducted research within a team and presented it at a conference in Exeter and my personal highlight of taking my Extended Project Qualification to a science fair in Adelaide, Australia where I presented my research into Hydrogen combustion engines within Formula 1.
I did all this in an effort to get accepted into a Russell Group university to study Physics, which has always been a passion of mine. After receiving my offer, the next few months were intense, as any student would tell you, but after countless hours studying, I managed it and here I am now.

I am a true believer in that for a student to have the best outcomes at the end of their studies, a strong foundation of understanding has to be built early on. That's why I teach students to really grasp topics and develop that initial understanding, so that when the time comes to test on it, they can adapt to any scenario and not just rely on memorising specific cheats to questions.
My online lessons will mostly be done over a call where I'll display a live view of my workings using a visualiser, so that my students can see my workings and thoughts in real time. These lessons would likely be around 1hr long, although I'm flexible so if another length is preferred it will most likely be possible.
For in-person lessons, they would be in either Durham (term time) or Cornwall (University holiday dates). They would be structured very similarly to the online lessons, focussing around the particular needs of my student and what they think they need to study. This could range to anything from specific question types and topic revision/learning to going over past exam papers in preparation for tests.
I am relatively new to being a private tutor, as any previous work has just been with friends and family, however I would consider myself more than qualified having 9s in all STEM subjects at GCSE and A*A*AA in Maths, Physics, Further Maths and Chemistry at A-Level respectively. What I lack in years of tutoring experience I make up for in familiarity to my students' situations, having only sat the exams they're sitting years ago means I am familiar with question types, tricks examiners use, tricks my students can use and how mark schemes are structured so my students can best adapt their answers to secure the best results possible. On top of this, I can offer revision tips that worked wonders for me, as well as how I managed to get through tougher times in my courses, with the aim that they never find themselves in those same situations.
