About Laya
I have been playing the piano for about 10 years now and I really enjoy it! In total, I play 4 instruments - piano, violin, guitar, and clarinet. In April 2019, I was able to play the violin in Carnegie Hall with the Temecula Conservatory of Music. My first student was my younger brother who was 6 years old then. By teaching him, I realized I loved inspiring others by sharing what I know about music. My goal is to help others play the piano and love music at the same time. I hope they will value and recognize the numerous possibilities music can produce in their lives. Here is a bit of my piano playing odyssey! I started playing the piano at the age of 6. My first piano teacher in Houston, TX was Mrs. Jennifer Hughes. Her way of teaching was strict as well as fun. Mrs. Hughes studied Piano Performance at Cleveland Institute of Music. I was introduced to Mrs. Iby Kovacs in Mission, TX. Mrs. Kovacs had an entirely different way of teaching. She focused on theory and piece memorization, which were technical things that helped me understand music better. Mrs. Kovacs was born in Hungary where she received her professional and classical education, graduating from the prestigious Franz Liszt Conservatory with a dual degree in Classical Piano and Solfeggio. She was recently inducted into the Piano Guild USA Hall of Fame. My piano teacher in Temecula, CA, was Mrs. Lillie Sandstrom. Mrs. Sandstrom taught me that correct practice makes perfect. She always encouraged me to make my pieces better. I have learned plenty of our Church’s hymns and songs as we explored different kinds of music. Mrs. Sandstrom is an excellent teacher and she has accompanied plenty of choirs and congregations for many years. As of right now, I am also working on Level 10 of my Certificate of Merit. I am working on repertoire songs, technique, theory, and sight reading. I was able to perform Sonatina in C Major in a recital allowing me to see how far my piano skills have come. In the 2022 Sonatina Festival, I was awarded First Place playing Sonatina Opus 36, No. 4 by Clementi. I love being able to perform and play for other people as it enables those listening to feel the joy coming from the music.

A typical piano lesson consists of four engaging parts:
Warm-up – We start with scales, chords, and music theory to build strong technical foundations.
Repertoire – We learn a new song from the piano book, focusing on playing with flow and expression.
Games & Practice – A fun, interactive activity or flashcard drill reinforces key musical concepts.
Fun Song – To end on a high note, students choose a piece they enjoy, or we explore an exciting excerpt together.
What sets this piano class apart is its balance of structured learning and creativity. Designed for beginner and intermediate students (ages 7-14), the lessons foster both skill development and a love for music in an engaging, supportive environment.
