About Yan Xin

Hi, I’m Yan! A passionate pianist, music scholar, and educator with a deep love for sharing the joy of music. I hold a Distinction in Trinity ATCL (Advanced Piano Performance) and a Bachelor’s in Classical Music (Piano Major, Violin Minor). I’ve also completed a Master’s in Musicology and am currently pursuing a PhD in Ethnomusicology, where I explore the fascinating connections between music, culture, and history. My academic training includes piano pedagogy, piano literature, and teaching principles, equipping me to address challenges like hand coordination, rhythm, and musical expression. I’ve always loved how music brings people together and helps us express ourselves in unique ways. Teaching allows me to share that joy while helping students build confidence, develop new skills, and achieve their goals—whether that’s playing their favourite song, acing an exam, or simply enjoying the process of learning. I design lessons around your goals, learning style, and musical interests—whether you’re preparing for exams, mastering classical repertoire, or playing for joy. Musicality First: Music is more than just notes on a page—it’s about expression, emotion, and storytelling! I focus on helping you develop musicality from day one, blending technique, rhythm, and creativity into every lesson. Whether it’s mastering a beautiful melody or tackling tricky passages, we’ll break things down in a way that’s engaging, fun, and rewarding. Beyond the Notes: Drawing from my PhD in Ethnomusicology, I weave global music traditions and historical context into lessons to deepen your understanding of music as a universal language. Typical Lesson Length: 1. 60 minutes (ideal for a well-rounded session covering technique, repertoire, theory, and creativity). 2. 45-minute sessions available for younger learners or beginners. What to Expect in Each Class: 1. Technique Warm-Up: Short, focused exercises to build finger strength, coordination, and posture. 2. Repertoire Learning: Dive into pieces you love while developing musicality, expression, and confidence. 3. Theory & Score Reading: Learn to read and interpret scores with ease, making practice more enjoyable and effective. 4. Aural Skills: Fun ear-training activities to sharpen your listening skills and enhance your overall musicianship.
