About Ryan
Hey there, Ryan here!
I'm a creative writer and educator, with experience both locally and internationally. My training and expertise is in songwriting and lyric forms, poetry, screenwriting, and prose.
Professionally, my background is in narrative design — the study and practice of telling stories. No matter the form, narratives should live and breathe, ebb and flow, surprise your audience, and ultimately, surprise you!
As a teacher, I've developed tangible lessons and takeaways that will take your writing to the next level. If you feel empowered, inspired, excited, and well-prepared, I will have done my job.

If you have passion for your story, you've got a story worth telling.
So much of the writing and creative process revolves around your unique sense of taste. You already love stories, your sense of taste is already dynamic, sensitive, and refined. The hard part is raising your skills to your level of taste. That's what makes good writers great.
In my time as an educator, I've learned about the value of practice. In my time as a narrative designer, I've learned about the value of writing stories that mean something to you. That mean everything to you.
In our lessons, we can work on the basics:
- Metaphors and poetic devices
- Story structure, rhythm, and momentum
- Rhyming, meter, and flow
- Formatting for prose, musicals, screenplay, TV, and poetry
We can also explore meaningful challenges:
- Re-sensitizing our sense of curiosity
- Being radically present
- Empathizing with the world around us
- Asking questions that don't have answers
I've taught elementary students, high school students, young adults, and the young-at-heart. No matter what kind of writing you're wanting to do, or what kind of stories you're wanting to tell, I'd really love to work with you to help you get there.

Let's chat and get everything set up! There's a free 30 minute lesson for us to get to know each other well, and for me to hear all about your goals, passions, and areas you're hoping to work on. Meeting at a coffee shop or a library works great!
A few more things to know:
- Typically, we schedule lessons for an hour, but longer sessions or shorter check-ins are also totally okay
- We can work towards any writing project, goal, assignment, or deadline you like
- I'll always have material prepped and ready before our lessons begin
- Included in the cost of lessons is any reading, analysis, write-ups, or feedback re: what we worked on
- I have a drive full of original writing exercises and prompts for all ages and experience levels that are yours to keep, even if you decide to do your learning in another place
