About Clarke
Teaching saxophone is a rewarding process of guiding students through both technical skill-building and creative discovery. I believe the best learning happens when students feel motivated, challenged, and supported, so I tailor each lesson to their individual goals, interests, and learning styles. Foundational skills like breath control, embouchure, posture, and finger technique are emphasized early to create a sustainable and confident playing experience. I also incorporate musicality from the beginning, teaching phrasing, dynamics, articulation, and vibrato alongside technical exercises. Music theory and ear training are integrated into lessons as relevant tools to understand and interpret music more deeply. Improvisation is encouraged at all levels as a means of expression and developing musical intuition, starting with simple motifs and progressing to complex melodic and harmonic ideas. Repertoire selection is collaborative and diverse, covering jazz standards, blues, classical works, contemporary pieces, and original compositions. I make use of technology, including recording software and backing tracks, to provide students with feedback and creative practice options. One of my most rewarding moments was supporting a student through a competitive audition, helping them build tone, confidence, and stylistic understanding that led to success. I prioritize creating a positive, encouraging environment where students feel safe to experiment and grow. My goal is to empower every student to become not only skilled saxophonists but passionate, expressive musicians who carry their love of music throughout their lives.

I believe that learning saxophone is a holistic process that involves technical skill, artistic interpretation, and personal expression. My teaching approach begins with cultivating a strong foundation in tone, breath support, finger technique, and rhythm, ensuring that students develop healthy habits and sound quality. I emphasize the importance of active listening and ear training to develop improvisational skills and musical intuition. Lessons are tailored to each student’s goals and musical tastes, whether they prefer jazz standards, classical works, or contemporary styles.
Improvisation and composition are introduced early as creative outlets that reinforce theory and technique. I integrate modern tools like slow-downer apps, recording software, and play-along tracks to enhance practice and keep lessons engaging. Performance skills, including stage presence and managing anxiety, are integral parts of the curriculum to prepare students for auditions, recitals, and gigs. I also encourage ensemble playing to foster communication and collaboration among musicians.
My teaching philosophy is student-centered, focusing on individualized pacing, positive reinforcement, and fostering a deep love for music. One of my proudest moments was supporting a student who overcame initial struggles with rhythm and phrasing to perform confidently at a jazz festival. I strive to create lessons that are both challenging and enjoyable, helping students grow into versatile, expressive saxophonists with a lifelong passion for music.
