TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
By
Charlie W. Flynt, PhD
My teaching philosophy is a product and synthesis of all my personal and professional life experiences. While I have clear beliefs about what higher education should do for students, my philosophy continues to evolve in response to new information and insights. Nevertheless, I believe that I have and learned enough to have a teaching philosophy that is representative of whom I am and that continues to guide me through my profession in higher education.
I believe in a liberal arts education because it teaches us that the tolerant consideration of new ideas often leads to better ways to support and enhance cherished ageless values. Our world demands that higher education produces such an increased capacity for critical thought. Our students learn in different ways and the college classroom must continually adapt to the evolving needs of our students. Higher education can never be an assembly line process resulting in a cookie-cutter product. Such educational processes do often result in a pliant electorate, an electorate not particularly suited to a representative democracy. My teaching philosophy is grounded on the values of my culture, but not limited by them. As new ideas are eventually accepted they sometimes become beliefs, then possibly new values that modify and enhance existing traditions. Ultimately, higher education bears a major responsibility for this societal growth, a growth that contributes to the best interests of humanity and the planet we share.
