About Toko

Je suis professeure certifiée de japonais avec un bac en littérature. J’ai eu la chance de travailler dans des domaines variés : le tourisme, les ressources humaines au Japon, ainsi que dans des écoles de langues au Canada et en ligne. Aujourd’hui, j’enseigne dans une institution internationale de langues et je donne aussi des cours privés en ligne. J’adore voyager, me détendre dans les onsen (sources thermales japonaises), me promener dans la nature, faire du vélo et cuisiner – surtout parce que je suis une grande gourmande !

I'm a certified Japanese language teacher with a Bachelor's degree in Literature. Over the years, I've worked in the tourism industry, human resources in Japan, and taught at language schools in Canada and online. Currently, I work for an international language institution and also offer private online lessons.
I’m passionate about traveling, relaxing in hot springs (onsen), walking in nature, cycling, cooking — and most of all, enjoying good food!

About the lesson

Je m'adapte aux desiderata de l'élève et ils peuvent comprendre l'étude de la grammaire, de l'écrit et/ou une pratique conversationnelle. Nous pouvons utiliser un livre comme matériel principal (Minna no Nihongo, Genki, Livres pour le JLPT, etc.), et je donnerai des documents supplémentaires si nécessaire. Ou nous pouvons simplement pratiquer la conversation!
I teach grammar, conversation, writing, etc. depend on the students' need. We can use some book as a main material (Minna no Nihongo, Genki, JLPT Books etc.), and I will give some supplementary handouts as needed. Or simply we can practice conversation!

I have been learning Japanese with Toko Sensei for about 4-5 years now. Before I was taking lesson with her in person, then I changed to online class because it was more convenient (no need to waste time in transportation), and it was perfect during the winter time.

As a teacher, Toko Sensei is really kind and patient, she will try to explain until you understand it. Initially, I had a lot of trouble with the basic verbs of "Taberu & Iku" (which are the foundational verbs), and after 1-2 lessons I managed to get it.

In terms of lesson, I think she is flexible. Myself, I started with the Genki book so I continued with that, and now I am on Genki II. After so many years of practice, I noticed that I started to get what people are saying on Japanese TV series. Just for reference, I was only taking 1 class per week at 1.5hrs.

I’ve been learning japanese with Tomo for 2 years and I’ve made so much progress I was confident enough to go to Japan on my own for a month. Not only is she a great teacher , she goes above and beyond to teach the language and the culture which is beautiful and so important! When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?
I developed an interest in becoming a Japanese teacher when I came to Canada to learn English and French. I had the opportunity to interact with both local and other international students who were passionate about learning Japanese language and culture. Seeing their curiosity and dedication inspired me deeply, then I realized how rewarding it is to help others connect with a new language, and how language can be a bridge between cultures.
What makes you passionate about your subject?
I've been passionate about sharing not just the language, but also the cultural nuances that make Japanese unique.
Teaching Japanese allows me to contribute to cross-cultural understanding and to help learners grow and discover new perspectives.
What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?
What I love about tutoring is the opportunity to understand each student personally and customize my teaching approach to match their specific strengths, challenges, and ambitions. I find it incredibly fulfilling to watch students grow in confidence and ability, especially when they start to enjoy the learning process.
Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.
Yes, I was inspired by one of my English teachers who was always kind, supportive, and made learning fun. Her passion and care for students made me want to become a teacher like her.
