About Carlyss

To bring out the best in my students, whether they're experienced, new to it all, young or mature, means that each session is different. Coming from shy roots, my techniques are varied but nurturing; building my student’s confidence as we go and gaining trust so we can get you working outside your comfort zone. My experience as a professional actor ranges from TV, stage, film, voice-over, commercials and radio work in venues such as The National Theatre, Shakespeare's Globe, The Old Vic and Donmar Warehouse and on channels such as Amazon, BBC, ITV, Channel 5 and Acorn TV. I have been teaching and coaching for over 17 years. As well as running a theatre school for 3-18s for over 10 years, I have worked as a teacher, coach and mentor with professional actors, young people, youth theatres, amateur dramatic societies, school groups, students in training and recent graduates.

About the lesson

Each session will be tailored to whatever you would like to focus on. A specific text or audition, a self-tape, drama school entry prep, monologue work, poetry, a presentation at work - you name it! Sessions can be either face-to-face in Leyton, at your home (location permitting) or over webcam. Each lesson may include voice and breath work, articulation, text analysis, memorisation techniques, presentation skills, RP & American accent coaching or improvisation, amongst other things. I have a keen interest in classical text and Shakespeare, as well as other acting practitioners such as Stanislavski and Meisner and I hold an enhanced DBS check. Typically an acting session will include a focus check - what you want to work on, a warm-up to get in the zone, a deep dive into text/analysis/the piece, exercises or techniques to explore, a review of the piece to see what's shifted, time for reflection.
