About Charlie

Charlie is a fiddle and bass player from Glenfarg, currently based in Glasgow. Having recorded with over 30 artists to date, Charlie plays in a duo with the harpist Rebecca Hill and enjoys performing internationally with a variety of artists including Siobhan Miller, Matt Carmichael, Juliette Lemoine, Ross Miller and Mischa MacPherson. Highlights as a solo artist include a New Voices commission for Glasgow’s Celtic Connections, performing at Proms in the Park and gaining the title of ‘BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year’. Charlie has enjoyed running workshops at festivals like the Scots Fiddle Festival, the Neil Gow Festival and Fèis Arainn, as well as one on one lessons online and in person. These have ranged from one off lessons discussing practice techniques and playing styles to regular lessons, to guiding pupils through curricular exams and from their first time playing an instrument!

About the lesson

In my one-on-one lessons we can look at a wide variety of material, exploring a range of styles that resonate with your musical interests. Whilst most lessons I teach last around an hour we can work around whatever suits you best. We’ll dive into repertoire, learning tunes while incorporating key techniques like ornamentation, bowing, and phrasing, with practice tips tailored to your progress and interests. While rooted in traditional fiddle music, my background in classical and jazz allows me to introduce diverse practice materials, helping to broaden your musical expression. Above all, I aim to create a fun, friendly, and encouraging environment where you can enjoy the journey of learning and playing!
