With so much free online guitar information out there today, guitar students can quickly experience "information overwhelm". This is because the material being taught is deeply DISCONNECTED. To learn the guitar well and efficiently, you need to know that everything in music is connected. Once you experience this, you will find that learning the guitar is much more manageable and the results you are looking for will develop more effectively. I can help you get those results!
I hold a Masters degree in Education, a Bachelor of Music degree and a Specialists Diploma in Rock, Blues and Jazz. I teach out of Dartmouth Nova Scotia, Canada.
With over 30 years of teaching experience and thousands of students - many of whom I have mentored for university entrance into music degree programs- I feel very confident I can help you grow as a guitarist too.
I have also taught extensively with groups both privately and within the local school system working with all ages. I am particularly proud of working closely with GUITAR FOR VETS...a grass roots organization helping War Veterans soften the experience of PTSD through learning guitar and music. This is the community outreach component of Dempster Guitar Studio.
Although I have stated an hourly tuition rate, it is a reflection of the Monthly or Term tuition I offer.
*The monthly tuition is a flat rate of $142 (regardless of 4 or 5 weeks in the month)
*The 4 month term tuition is a flat rate of $510 (approx.16 sessions saving 10%).
*Online tuition is $200 for 4 (one hour) sessions.
I've known Steve since he graciously stepped in to play at my wedding in the mid 90s. His skills as a guitarist are excellent but his forte is his ability to help others fulfil their potential. He taught my son for a few years when my son was 9-12. We were unable to continue lessons at the time but we are now resuming as my son has been asking for three years when he can take lessons again. No one else has been good enough.
Steve is a great teacher because he listens to his students and helps them to discover the music they want to play instead of imposing music upon them. He is kind but not afraid to push people to try things they may not immediately feel confident with. He also has a very sharp sense of humour!
Stephen has an exceptional guitar instructor. He took the time to understand where I was and what I wanted / needed to learn and then built up a curriculum to help me achieve my goals. I learned more from him in my first lesson than I did in 8 lessons with other instructors. He listens carefully to your questions and comments and gives thoughtful and insightful answers. I can't recommend him highly enough!
Stephen taught me face to face guitar lessons for over 6 years of steady lessons, and then the occasional booster class. He is patient and methodical as a teacher, and is willing to help you accomplish your personal goals. Through Stephen I came to appreciate not just the mechanics of chords, scales and strumming, but also music theory and rhythm. He was responsive to my interest in creating my own compositions, and showed me finger styles and percussive techniques that added interest to my songs. He is also comfortable teaching classes online and does so very effectively. I would highly recommend him as a teacher.
I've known Stephen for several years as my guitar teacher. A phenomenal guitar player, he's also developed an excellent teaching style, remarkably knowledgeable in music theory, and how to apply this knowledge to playing the instrument. He's calm, thorough and considerate of individual student needs, often using metaphors and parallels to clarify his teaching points. I'd recommend Stephen to absolutely anyone at any skill level.
Stephen is a great, patient , guitar teacher with a ton of knowledge and always delivers his best. I have taken private guitar lessons with Stephen and would highly recommend him for any age and skill level.
Stephen is an exceptional teacher. His lessons are spot. Instead of learning how to play songs you’ll learn how to play the guitar. You’ll learn all about the fret board and will be jamming along in no time. Highly recommend if you want to learn how to play right.
Stephen is personable, professional and knowledgeable! It is obvious to me, that he truly cares about his students and loves what he does!
Stephen is a knowledgeable, rigorous and warm hearted teacher. He has a unique way of teaching rhythm by focusing first on how the rhythm «feels». This is a more intuitive and effective approach than relying only on «counting» or on pre-set strumming patterns, which can come later in the process. Stephen is also a firm believer in music theory, which is an invaluable tool for any guitarist who whishes to express him/herself on the instrument and go beyond mere rote playing. I purchased the course on strumming and took a private lesson with Stephen, and it allowed me to «go to the next level» in my musical development. I'm grateful to him for his teaching and have incorporated what I learned into my personal playing...for the better ;-)
